I don't like to use the word "fair" but I can say that this is definitelty a poor choice on the dad's part. If she was already going to camp, then he needs to make the punishment equal with the crime, like she's grounded before or after camp, or not even ground her for expressing some emotion.
What he has done is make it so that she doesn't trust him. If he said she could go, it was paid for, and she was on her way, then he needed to leave that alone

Yeah, It is a bit harsh...

but i'm sure her Dad made that decision in light of a whole lot of other factors... and unfortunately, I don't think you not having a room-mate at camp was one of them.

Maybe your friend could talk her Dad around... if she really wants to go to camp, and she is truly sorry for the comment, she could go to her Dad with a different but similarly serious penalty. Don't just whine and say it's unfair. Explain her feelings and give him another suggestion.(eg grounding for 2 weeks after camp or something)

It's really to see all sides of the situation - but that MIGHT work.

To the one nick names "ggh"
They are only kids ... If you read between the lines the dad has the money to send her to camp though now he is being a jerk because she is acting like an teenager.

EVERY teen says "I hate you" to their parents in a life time. You say you didnt you are lieing...
It doesn't say how old the girls are though they can't actually work until they are 16 .. So how would she go about working ..."You act like her earning $400 is some huge thing."

They shouldn't have to care about anything you stated "worked every day to support a child, woken up every few hours for the first year of their life, fed them, clothed them, gotten them ready and took them to and from school every day, played with them, taken them to activities, listened to them, loved them only to have the little ingrate turn around and says she hates you in return?" They are kids ... that **** they dont think about or worry about until they are older.
It is unfair to ask a teenager a question such as you did.

NO ONE askes to be born ... so to your comment"What about the tens of thousands her Dad she says she hates spent to raise her?"

That was his and the woman's choice to have her...

It is unfair to you , yes. but it's very easy for you to say it's unfair for her. Have you worked every day to support a child, woken up every few hours for the first year of their life, fed them, clothed them, gotten them ready and took them to and from school every day, played with them, taken them to activities, listened to them, loved them only to have the little ingrate turn around and says she hates you in return? You act like her earning $400 is some huge thing. What about the tens of thousands her Dad she says she hates spent to raise her?

Your friend is a brat and an ingrate. She is getting what she deserves. I feel sorry for you that you are having to be punished for it, too.

Ok, well she shouldn't have said it, but then that's 400 bucks down the drain. hopefully she can get a refund. Or he may cave in the end. Letting her think that she can't go may be her punishment. But it might be more than just the "i hate you" thing. there might me more that she's being punished for. you just dont know.
Hope it all works out.

Yea that is bullshit ...
Everyone says "I hate you" to thier parents once in a life time if not more. It is just something that teenagers do.

I know she probably has already talked to him about it ... How about her MoM?
If he is going to be an asshole about it not matter what ... Maybe they can work out a deal for her to work for or off the money.
Keep trying to talk to him about it ...
best of luck

It may not be fair to you, but she should learn not to say things like that behind her fathers' back. I hope you have fun without her.

unfair...he should let her go just to get some time to think and get away from him...way to make her resent him more.
