2Pac's #1 fan!, No I'm saying the depiction of animals and natural things in art is forbidden in Islam...but they still depict things in photography, video and film..not to mention decapitations, hangings etc...what is the big deal about drawing and painting that is so different regarding depictions that makes it forbidden.

do you know why drawing picture was forbidden? the major reason for this was that many messengers from God came to the Earth. they told the people to worship one god. these messengers include Jesus, Abraham, David, Adam. what happened after that was the people who followed these messengers later on started painting their heroes. their generations then started to worship these drawings and idols. you can see this in ur churches today how you have painted jesus and mary. the worship of other thing else than one God is forbidden in islam. painting and making idols have bieng the major sources to these worships. thats why painting and making idols of living thing has been forbidden. IN modern days muslim scholars are debating on it. most muslim scholars agree that photos for id cards and passports are modern day needs and doesnt come under the catagory.
one thing should be clear. modern day disadvantages of photos and vidios are pornography and picuteres of women which are specially made to attract men. these are forbidden where they are vidio or pics. i should tell it to u, law for both pic and vidio is the same,
those who treat them differently has the major reason that u cannot worship vidios like u can worship pics. anyhow this is an ongoing discussion since modern people have stoped worshiping their heroes as they did before. islam is a flexible religion and it laws changes according to time but its not a common mans job. its scholars job. hope this satisfies u.

You make a good point here. The Muslims who go around with digital cameras also have paintings, drawings all around them. The ones who strictly believe in not depicting images will also, not believe in paintings and drawings.

Photography is not allowed in Islam unless until it is required for any legal reasons like Passport or ID Card. So is paintings and drawings if they are of living beings, as people use to draw their idols in those days and pray them. However, I think painting or drawing itself is allowed as long as it does not depict any image of a living being.

I think it has to do with a fixed object.

recordings are just images of light that are projected while paintings are more permanate.

it all goes back to the idea of not creating anything that might be worshiped as an idol
