I have never owned a gun so I know nothing about them. I want a handgun that is easy to reload yet powerful. What brand and model would be good? How do I go about finding a safe place to fire a weapon?

You need to find a legitimate place to shoot first, then think about getting one. Then check into local and state laws regarding ownership. Go to a local gunshop and they can help you out. As for powerful, it's a bit overrated in a handgun (unless you're hunting bears). Accuracy is more important. A Rugar .22 caliber bolt action target pistol is more accurate than a .45ACP Colt, and if you can't hit the target it isn't much fun. If your looking for personal protection, look for a .40 caliber compact. Not very accurate over 25 yards (limitations of a short barrel) but has good power in a small size. Avoid .38's or .380's. If you just want shear power look for the .454 Wieldy or .440 Corbon. Very big, very expensive, will pretty much go through a bus.

If you are going to own a gun, you should learn how to be safe with it. See if you can locate a gun club in your area. Tell them you are a new shooter and see if there is a class available.

The National Rifle Association has around 50,000 instructors. Chances are good that one lives near you. http://www.nrahq.org/education/training/basictraining.asp

Don't be ashamed to buy an airgun. You can buy a nice one for under $100 and you easily make a safe range in your basement or garage. Skill is gained through 'trigger time.'

After you take a class or two you will have a better idea of the kind of pistol that suits your purposes.

Keep your muzzle in a safe direction!

Well...in your defense, you said nothing about killing animals, so ignore the person that mentioned that.

Secondly, why are you asking on Yahoo Answers?

Go to a gun shop. They can answer all your questions on the procedure to be followed in buying guns and can help you decide what firearm is best for you.

Just don't use it to harm anyone, eh? Unless, of course, in the case of self-defense.

Owning a firearm is a VERY serious thing.

Let's all hope you are mature enough to own one.

just get something small to start with like a glock with a clip so its easy to load and check your area for gun ranges or a friend with a lot of land

How would you like someone shooting at you, not out of spite, or anger but just for the hell of it. Why kill innocent animals? Find a better way to spend your time, such as helping animals rather then killing them. It is purly selfish.

Get something in 45 ACP, and fire at the shooting range.
