Depends, what do you find yourself lying about?? When people ask about how they look or what they're wearing?? is that what you lie about the most?? If so, you are trying to protect their feelings or avoid confrontation. Do you lie more about how much you know?? than you are trying to seem more intelligent, maybe you feel insecure about how much smarter everyone is around you and you try to act like you're more knowledgeable.
Do you tend to lie about being sick? or in trouble, than you feel the need for constant attention, you are a compulsive liar. (My opinion)

This is a snipet of the website. It has some articles and it may help you, so check the website above.

For a compulsive liar, lying becomes second nature.

Not only do compulsive liars bend the truth about issues large and small, but they take some comfort in it. Lying feels right to a compulsive liar. Telling the truth, on the other hand, is difficult for a compulsive liar to do.

And like any other behavior that provides comfort and an escape from discomfort (i.e., alcohol, drugs, sex), lying can become very addictive and hard to stop. For the compulsive liar, lying feels safe and this fuels the desire to lie even more.

And like most addictive behaviors, compulsive lying is hard for the person involved to see, but it hurts those who are around it. Compulsive lying, if not stopped, can destroy relationships at work and home (see, Ask an Expert - Compulsive Lying).

Why shouldn't you be honest? Honesty is the most important thing about a person. If you aren't honest, everybody will walk away from you. I am surprised that you could ever write this, or are you lying here too. Tell the true whatever it is, and everybody will respect you for it.

Because HONESTY is a thing which can be attained by a hard training and through a long time.
You must have jenuine friends with whom you can practise the first steps!!!

Because when you lie (and no one knows it's a lie), you can alter the truth to suit your situation, which gives you more control than the truth, which is (presumably) unalterable.

Either you are insecure and lie to protect yourself, Or you are a control freak.

you don't want to hurt those around you...

If that's not it, then you just have a hard time being yourself. Take a while to relax and try to find your inner self and you may feel better about a lot of things ;)
