depends on the city you're in. by definition, it is the smallest unit that is bound by streets. in nyc, about 300 feet can be a block. in oklahoma city where i grew up, it was more like 375-400 feet.

EDIT: just to save some confusion, a block is not a distance so much as an area. a block is a square or a rectangle in shape usually. so when people say go down 2 blocks, they're really saying go down THE SIDE of 2 blocks.

It really depends. I used to think that a building block was 100-150m. But once I went to Warsaw and I tarted walking around. Oh boy their building blocks are about 1000m long. Good old Communistic Architecture.
