Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, passed by the Senate, to allow LBJ to use US forces against the VC. This was passed after some US PT boats were fired on (was sketchy).

It depends on who you're asking. The French were in Vietnam trying to colonize it. The communists were in Vietnam trying to create and nurture a communist government. The U.S. went in to stop communism from taking a stronger hold. The Vietnamese saw little difference between what the French were doing and what the U.S. was doing, and so they thought the U.S. were colonists. It got to be a giant, hairy disaster, as you may or may not know. Too many hands in the pie, everybody wanting something different, and a ton of misunderstandings and misinterpretations flying around.

Because US was acting like a fanatic capitalist. At that period of time two super powers were at each others throat through the countries they could grab. As Vietnam was falling in the clutch of communism, US had to stop it. This fight for specific '-ism's are the cause for many blood shed through out the centuries.

the gulf of tonkin was just a reason for the us to stick it's nose in to stop the spread of communisium.the true problem started after ww2 with the french.it even goes back even farther than that with japannese.vietnam was fought over for many years before we got there.we were just the last ones.

North vietnam was communist and the US had a policy of 'containing communism'.
