May be because its one of the only two countries in NATO where their forces are actually engaged in combat and they have more important things to think about.

There have been gays in the military since time began, its just that until this generation no-one has rammed it down other peoples throats (if you will excuse the pun).

I don't understand why some gay people have to make such an issue about telling everybody that they are gay all the time. I never feel the need to tell people what my sexuality, or fro that matter my religion is. I just am what i am and its my personal business.

I define myself publically by what I do and what I can achieve.

The ban should be removed. Patriotism and professionalism fit well into this question. If you are a homosexual or a heterosexual you will not be having sex on barracks grounds on a wartime footing in a war zone. You will only think about bullets being fired at you or from you to someone else. If you are willing to take that chance then I don't care if your name is Long Dong Silver and you wear a pink tutu, just as long as you are patriotic and professional in the military, complying with all military regulations and traditions while fighting for your country, then I say gays should go out and fight because patriotism does not care if you are straight or a pillow biter.

Gays have always been in the military.. Think about it.. we live in a country where Gordon Ramsey is bleeped out, where if nudity is shown on the TV people get freaked out and think they are going to hell if they see this or that (by the way those usually do it when they think no one else knows)

Personally I am not gay, but I figure to get though this life we should be the best we can be toward others and as long as we do not hurt anyone else, we can do as we please.

It is long past the time for the U.S. to lift the ban on gays in the military.

It's only a de facto ban. Since the Clinton administration the US military has worked with a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy; on the whole this is effective, apart from the odd reactionary base commander who decides he needs to set an example, or prove a point - you've always got to wonder why people like that tend to go so over the top, a case of "methinks the lady does protest o'er much"?

The ban on open 'gays' in the military still exists because we are still the world leader in violent crimes and murder for the simple reason that we [Americans] are the most fearful, paranoid, yet socially inhibited, people that remain uncared for by their government.

It sounds strange but if you fear something and what it could do to you or your position in life, you'll do anything to stand in its way; even if it's a way of life as innocent and natural as the one you call your own. As for the government and their 'ban', it's fear; fear of the dying down of the threat of violence the US poses in the collective minds of other countries and the worried concept that once laying to rest the 'big stick' might result in forgetting how to use it.

Thank you Teddy Roosevelt for your demonstration in reluctant parenting by the handle of an axe.

If you want gays to get a shot in the back of the head or in their butt.

Otherwise, most people do NOT accept gays into their sleeping quarters or want much to do with them.

Perhaps that is being very negative, but that is the way most people view them at this time.

As long as they try to keep jamming themselves into other people's lives then they can expect people to be a bit negative about what they want or do.

Some people try to be tolerate to a point, but the in-your-face approach by gays is not the way to do it.

Because the U.S., even though it's filled with a bunch of overly opinionated douches with their half-****** ideas, is still...

Well dumb. I don't know. I'm not going to bother using any fancy wording because I don't think there needs to be that much of an effort. Dumb is a good enough word.

Really though, alot of things here are really behind. We're not the worst, but we could do better.

I agree. I see no reason not to allow gay people in the military, I mean...FFS they let women in and I bet there are a lot of people out there still who thought that would NEVER happen.

If a man/woman wants to fight for our country and they are physically and mentally able, then let them in!!!

Problem is...I think the Government still sees being gay as a mental defect...now THAT'S sad!!!

The issue is the moral of the other troops, how would you feel having a shower, knowing that someone was eying you up.

Don't agree with the law, however there are more important issues like to welfare and morale of serving forces away from home that also need to be addressed.

I know the U.S is a liberal country, but accepting gays as people with an alternate lifestyle, like smokers and drinkers is just morally wrong.
Homosexualism is a psychological disorder that needs medical attention.
You wouldn't consider a man who likes having sex with animals as simply someone with an alternate lifestyle would you?
If you do, God bless your soul.
