Tianjin? Really?
Tianjin is a nice, provincial city. It won't be nearly as cosmopolitan as those other cities you will be visiting. However, it is beginning to look more cosmopolitan. Tianjin has beautiful concession areas. I know a great travel agent who will take you on a tour of the concession areas, in English. If you are interested, say so in response and I will post his email address.
In Tianjin, you should definitely visit the concession areas, the Drum Tower and/or Ancient Culture street, and possibly a couple of temples, though when you've seen one, you've seen them all. It also has a beautiful water park.
Da Hu Tong is a lot of fun. It's a huge complex of shops that sell everything you can imagine, from mops to clothes to toys to electronics. It's not very pretty, but it's very Chinese. It's not for tourists, but the tourists I've brought there like it.
Surprisingly most foreign visitors to Tianjin say it is their favorite city in China. That may be because the reason they come here is visit family living here and so they have familiar tour guides. Or it may be because it is so provincial in attitude but modern in appearance and amenities.
I've been to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangdong, and Beijing. My husband has been to Shenzen. Of them all, I like Hong Kong and Beijing the best. Guangdong (Guangzhou city) doesn't have much to offer, in my opinion, though a river does run through it. In Shenzen, you might as well be in Hong Kong. And I found Shanghai to be a real bust. The Bund was a major disappointment. Of course, I'm not much into nightlife, and when I shop, I shop cheap, so maybe I missed out on the best part of Shanghai.
It sounds like you are visiting on business because all those cities are popular business destinations. Good luck.

I believe I would link up with a travel group out of Hong Kong. That way, you will get what you pay for. As far as Shenzhen, there is really nothing there. However, the rest of your trip will be exciting.
The first stop after you finish touring Hong Kong will be Guangzhou. This has been my home for five years and I still have barely dented the restaurant scene.
The water can be a problem in most places, but Guangzhou and Shanghai have water quality that is quite good. But, bottled water is recommended for a visitor.
Being a visitor, I would say to stay away from raw seafood. Although I have never been sick, most people will become ill.If you order American Beef, you will probably get Guangdong beef, which has less fat value.
Women should not wear jewelry and have a handbag with a strong strap to protect against motor cycle crooks. My wife is Chinese and they still got her bag.
All and all, the trip will be nice; you will not see human rights violations as is in USA news. If you want to go to church, that is no problem, I go each week.
Most people develop stomach problems, I actually use the Chinese medicinal medicines, and never have too many problems.

Make sure that you know some Chinese words because there are places here where English is not spoken at all.
Be ready to eat what's locally available.
Bring your own medicines if you do not want to settle for Chinese medicines when you get sick.
Always keep your valuables (wallet, mobile phone and passport) close to you, either in your pockets or in a bag you can always carry around.
Do not drink the tap water, no matter what happens.
Be gracious to all the people you meet. The Chinese people are a good lot! :)

Know their language. I am now in China with my wife and 2 gals (8, 7 yrs). I base my research on Internet, Let's Go, Lonely Planet, etc.
But when I am in China, I realised that those westerner do not provide the right information. I am now using the local travel guide, got them in GuangZhuo.
All I can say is, thank God I know Chinese. I really enjoy myself in China. I can avoid the tourist places, and enjoy the cheaper local food.
I love China.

I'd stick around Hong Kong, don't drift off in rural territories. Remember Chinese customs are VERY different then here. DON'T SPIT ON THE GROUND.
