but if you really want to know....

If its for dinner rolls, its best to use your fingers you gently break off a bite size piece, hold this in your left hand and use your right hand, holding the butter knife to cut of a small wedge of butter. If its a big dinner and there's a central butter plate, its acceptabe to put a larger pat of butter on your bread plate to make things easier. The main thing is to butter the roll a bit at a time. Dont cut it in haf and slather it with butter or break the roll into a bunch of bite size pieces and butter them all...it's somewhat gauche.

you are supposed to spread the butter with the butter knife
I din't know abt the bread knife i thought it was just for commerical production of bread.
