I am obviously (from the other answers) the exception, not the rule, but if it was a serious relationship I usually wait at least a couple of months just so I make sure that when I do meet someone new, my attraction for them is genuine and unfettered by my feelings about my ex. If you don't wait, you really risk simply transferring feelings from your old partner to your new which can create that feeling of "hyper-acceleration" of intimacy and depth of feeling. This can make a person more intense than is really warranted by the situation and scare off potential partners that are reasonable people, but attract the nutty people that are also way too intense to exist in a maintainable relationship.

Besides, what's so bad about taking a breather and spending some time on yourself. That's the most important relationship you'll ever have.

If you had a good relationship and left on good terms, it doesn't hurt to wait a short period out of respect for the past relationship. Maybe a month for actual "dating". You may not want ot give the impression it was all meaningless and that you don't have any feelings over it ending. That could also possibly leave a bad impression with someone you end up dating, when it comes to sincerity. Doesn't mean you can't socialize.

If the breakup was nasty, you have no feelings left to protect, so go for it if the opportunity arrives.

1 minute, 10 years, it is up to the person, and how much was inversted into the relationshiip. The years together and the reason for the break up. I think you should wait until the time feels right in your heart, until then, get with a close few friends and go out together or rent movies, just enjoy life as it happens....

Take care, and good luck, but remember, please smile! You are loved and though of with great people!

Well take my advise, I just broke up yesterday and I'm going out tonight. If you get out there you will get over the ex and find someone better. Dont mope around only makes it worse. I know I was in it for 3 1/2 years. Im moving on.

there is no such time prescribed in the books... there is no healing process.... dating anyone else depends on how deeply you loved the previous person... it will also depend on how deeply you are hurt.... it will also depend on how fast can you get the right person to date...
alll these and more, factors come into the picture....
dating is just a click..... if someone clicks in your life, you date that person.....

wait until you are truley over the other person
because then you will find yourself doing things to spite that person, or you will look for qualities in this new person that the old person has... its just unhealthy...
you need to be able to like the new person for who they are and treat them accordingly instead of having secret (or even subconcious) motives

BREAKERS & BREAKEES.

Wait only fore yourself. Two minutes or two decaids. It's all on how you feel. Dont spend waisted time on a new person or by yourself. Do what feels right.

As long as it takes. If one dates right away, I'd think of him/her as a player.
