First of all, get off yahoo answers. It's addicting and will keep anybody from sleeping.
I've had severe sleep problems all my life so I seriously know what you're going through. Since medication isn't an answer for tonight, you need to try the other things suggested- reading a boring book, drinking hot milk (contains trptophan which can be very helpful!), a hot shower often helps. And above all relax- you will survive the one night.
Now for the long term- I've found that homeopathics help as much for sleep as prescription meds and they're much safer. I've got a messed up body clock and nothing works to reset it. I used to work 8-5 and only slept weekends to do it. I eventually lost it completely. I've gone months without sleeping more then minutes at a time- never got into REM sleep. It's hard to think, short term memory is gone, I now have disability for my bipolar even though my mood is fine as long as I sleep. The point is I'm still alive, I just don't function too well as a result. I learned that I should have given up trying to reset my body clock and found a job 2nd shift- I'd still be working today if I had. It's more important to sleep when my body lets me- then just about anything else.
I also have sleep apnea and I use oxygen now- it allows me to sleep for longer periods of time and get into REM sleep. (thank God!!!!)
If you have restless legs- a good B complex and Calcium/magnesium will work wonders.
If you have racing thoughts and they continue- see a psychiatrist and make sure you tell them.
I'll think of something else later. Oh- and one person reminded you- bed is only for sleep not watching TV.... the point is not to toss and turn forever and ever... that's worse then no sleep. Do something if you have to get up- but make sure it's boring and not addictive like yahoo answers. Like someone else said- read the dictionary.

Ok, these are things that have actually worked for me, and this is keeping in mind that you can't get to medication. I Woulda suggested a sleeping pill, like Unisom or something, but, if you can't get to that, try these =)
Read a book - reading actually puts your mind to sleep
Get addicted to Answers - yes, i know - but, it's worked many times for me
Play online games - go to yahoo! games, or pogo.com and play some games
Put on relaxing music - you can still listen with your hearing aids on. Try something like enya, or thunderstorms. There's actually a radio site out there that offers relaxing radio stations as well as many others: http://www.icebergradio.com
Turn the lights off - even the smallest of lights can keep ya up.
Think about something - not stressful things though...like, what ya did today, and "reflect"
Hope some of these help ya =)
Now i'm tired...thanks! LOL ;)

Begin to wind down about an hour or two before bed. Use your bedroom only for sleeping. This means no TV, no reading, no eating... just sleeping. Set a schedule: Go to bed at a certain time every night and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends. In your case, I would suggest going to bed no later than midnight. Don't drink alcohol or coffee before bed. If you're thirsty, drink a glass of water or warm milk. Take a bath or a shower before bed to help you relax.

Well, I would have said listen to music... But since you require hearing aids then I would suggest reading. It allows your mind to drift where it will, and that's what helps me get to sleep... If you're a person who starts seeing images in your head and thinking about strange things before you fall asleep then just let them come and go where they will, don't try to hold onto any thought for too long, and try not to emotionally attach yourself to falling asleep, that just makes it harder on yourself.
You can also try chamomille tea, as it has relaxing properties in it. I realize you said no medication, but there is an herb you can try called valerian root. It smells alittle strange but it helps you relax a ton. Ganja also helps, but since it's illegal... Well you know.
I hope this helps!

Drink warm milk, take your hearing aids out and read the dictionary. Teach your dog to lick your face when it gets smacked in the butt. Then construct an alarm clock with an arm that smacks your dog when it goes off instead of it making inaudible noise. When it goes off your dog will lick your face, and you are off to work.
Sorry that wasn't helpful at all.

Try sleeping in a quiet cool room with no distractions such as no TV, music or other people, drink a glass of warm milk before going to bed...
It takes the average person about 7 minutes to go to sleep ... if this doesn't help try going to a sleep disorder doctor.
