Don't fret. It's not that difficult.

Woman - female.

Dressed - she is wearing something

Designer jeans - denim pants made under a label other than Levi or Lee (the two most popular makers), which are more expensive than usual.

runs up - purchases

tab - the bill.

The total of her purchases was $500.

If you get stuck with English/US jargon, feel free to emai me and we can discuss (penpal style).

"Runs up a $500 tab" means picks out things to buy whose total price is $500. "Tab" usually means private charge agreement between business owner and customer (in a bar, you can tell the owner, "Please put it on my tab" and he will scribble it on the sheet of paper where he keeps track of how much you owe, then charge you for the total amount weekly, monthly, or whatever). But in this case, it is more likely to just mean "the bill" even if you are paying cash or charging it to your Visa card.

But the sentence itself is strange... It implies that anyone who is wearing designer jeans (i.e. expensive denim pants) will *always* spend $500 whenever she goes shopping--not just for the jeans. I think the correct sentence should read, "A woman who buys designer jeans will run up a $500 tab." because the jeans are so expensive...

Designer jeans are more expensive, fashionable jeans. Running up a tab means charging something to ones personal credit to a business, usually at a bar or restaurant. This means she owes $500.

A "tab" in this case is a bill. Usually people "run up a tab" in a bar. This simply means that you do not pay the bartender right away for each drink that you order. Instead, each time you order a drink, the bartender adds it to your bill and when you are done drinking and are ready to leave then you pay for all of your drinks at once. Like in a restaurant. You do not get a separate bill for appetizers, the entree and then dessert. You get one final bill at the end of the meal for everything that you ordered. Hope this helps!

you just witness materialism at its best, overbearing, don't get involved in it, its simple redundant way to push automation into someone that feels skeptical about such materialistic practices, i don't see the point either, simply because the Woman was already using expensive jean's designer jean's overall!<<<<>>>>but, not your self. in other words don't sell your self short.
