It really depends what format video and audio your avi file contains.
Where the file was obtained (not going to get into that), if there is any informations stating about the DivX player/codec (or even just the word DivX, for example, in a torrent), then you will need DivX to play back the file (more specifically, the DivX Play package) - www.divx.com (Whodathunk)
If your avi file came with information stating what codec it uses, then a search for that codec will probably be helpfull...
If you are still stumped, you can try VideoLAN's VLC Media player and see if it can sucessfully play back the file (it's also not as much of a bloat as other codecs, which tend to include players and other unnecessary stuff) - www.videolan.org
P.S. - Codec is short for enCOde - DECode, and is the name of a file, plugin, or just format for a method of playback and/or creation of certain files.

You shouldn't need any more software for a simple AVI file. The file is either corrupted or uses a different codec, which is the encode/decode software for media files. More information is required.

avi is only a packet. it would nicely be any format. maximum Divx and Xvid archives are also utilising the .avi extension. the excellent way is to get carry of a application said as G-spot. It examine the document and ascertain what codec is pick to play the document.
