Hi Lynn,
The most important thing you need to consider before searching for a person online, is whether the person has an online presence. There are a number of ways web presence can be built:
1. Having a website or web page
2. Interacting on a web Forum
3. Registration on community sites
4. School and college listings of alumni
Google and many other search engines have this disadvantage, that if the person is not having an online presence, he is deemed non-existent as far as the Internet is concerned. So if this person only uses the internet for private Email, chances are Google won't throw up much.
However the best way to search on Google is by typing the following in the query:
"Full Name" "Address"
for example:
"Navin Q" "Mumbai"
This string [with the quotes] will hopefully throw up info about me. Note that the person need not be unique, so you'll find a lot of people if the name is a common one like Jack or Mary.
Best of luck on your search and do tell us about your success

It's called a background check. There are various sites that will do it, but you have to pay.
