I work in a busy Dr. office and I went on this weekend while we were closed and was diagnosed by the dr. i work for with a very bad case of strep throat. However she still expected me to show up, and gave me a perscription that is very expensive even with insurance that wasn't even somthing you treat strep throat with. I called in the next day and to my suprise she was not happy. How do I handle this?

well just tell her that you had great concern for your patents and wanted to keep from spreading it to them. i mean common a Dr should know how fast that could spread like wild fire.

Consult another doctor and 1) start a malpractice suit against your Dr. boss for not perscribing proper treatment, 2) get a note from a new Dr. that states that you are too sick to work. If he fires you for not showing up, the form the new Dr. gives you is a legally enforceable document that will protect your rights as a worker, regardless if you have sick time or not. If you do not have sick days or recieve normal compensation for being off sick, then it goes as unpaid leave. I know for a fact that Strep throat is not something you want to have around the office, and it would be in your doctor's best interest to keep you out of the office and away from infecting everyone else there. But again, first step is to see another doc. that will write you a proper note. After that, it's deciding how you would like to proceed at your job.

Your doctor should do a lab test , I believe there is a swab that is farily accurate, but culture method s best. Some doctors are arrogant jerks but as a former hospital employee I suggest you find a specialist - ear nose and throat Dr-. and find another doctor to work for soon. I had a staph infection for 2 years - I was mis-diagnosed by 4 Docs for that simple infection before I went to a specialist and got the right diagnosis . I have a degree in Physiology and can say from experience that many docs have limited knowlege of body functions let alone bacteriology. Give me an old time Doc anyday.
PS Wash your hands diligently

Go to another doctor for a second opinion and show them the prescription. Then you would have proof.

Further info:

Medications

Antibiotics are the treatment of choice for a confirmed strep throat infection.

Antibiotics will reduce the time you are contagious. You are usually not contagious 24 to 48 hours after starting antibiotics.
Antibiotic treatment for strep throat can also help prevent some of the rare complications related either to the strep infection itself or to the body's immune response to the infection. Complications of strep throat are rare but can occur, especially if strep throat is not properly treated.

Antibiotics may be used in the following situations:

You have had a positive rapid strep test or positive throat culture.
You have three of the following signs or symptoms:
A recent fever
White or yellow spots or coating on the throat or tonsils
Swollen or tender lymph nodes on the neck
Absence of signs of a cold or other upper respiratory illness, such as coughing or sneezing
You have recently had rheumatic fever and have been exposed to strep. Preventive antibiotics may be given in some cases.
Several family members are having repeated strep infections as confirmed by positive throat cultures.

Medication Choices

Antibiotics such as penicillin, cephalexin, or amoxicillin are used to treat strep throat infection. 2

I use to get this as well through grade school all the way till I was 15. Go get your tonsils out! It will help and you will not experience this type of pain. Eat cold stuff for example, pop sickle it helps sooth the pain and the brings down the swelling. Also; do not drink anything with acid like orange Juice and soda. Do not eat ice cream, try and eat apple sauce. Go to a doctor and get a doctor's note. You should be in bed resting however, strep throat is not contagious, so you can not pass it to anyone...so that is probably why your boss is expecting you to come to work everyday....annoying, I know! But do all of this and it will make you feel better, and you won' loose your job!

First of all working for a doctor she should have given you samples of an antibiotic or a shot! I think you should explain the situation about the insurance and if you had any fever you needed to be at home. When you are out with a fever you are more susceptible to More illnesses. Shame on your boss! She must not have empathy on sick people especially her own employees. Be bold when you talk to her and stand up for yourself. If you talk to her like you are intimidated she Will always treat you like this. It also might be a good idea not to discuss with other employees. Gossip spreads fast and that could make your issue worse. I hope you feel better.

Expensive perscription?? Amoxicilin which is under $20 (atleast in Manitoba) treats a lot of different infections.

Sounds like your boss the doc has issues. Get a second opinion, and when you're sick, you're sick, she should respect this. Take it up with human resources at your work or is she also human resources? You need to find another job if she's this bipolar! Remind her about Joint commissions standards, and especially your health department, no employees with sicknesses working around patients:

doctors should know even THEY get sick & are NOT above a day off for being ill. any GOOD doctor would not punish an employee for staying home a day if the employee had strpe in fact a few days off is more like the story

Go to another doctor and get a second opinion. She can't force you to go to work, especially fully knowing that you're sick. Being in a doctor's office, she should really act more professional and want her sick employees to be away from patients and other employees.

Quit. You deserve better. Plus, strep throat doesn't need anything really expensive to cure it. Tell her to stop being a...... insensitive person and quit. I hope you feel better.
