Im a canadian, married to an american man. Has anyone had to go through the process of applying for permanent residency in Canada. And if so, any words of advice? Or caution?
Thanks!

I am going through the process right now with my husband who is from the US as well. Are you doing the Spousal Sponsorship? There are two ways of doing it, you can apply while your husband stays in the US(that is one set of paper work) or you can have him move to canada with you (which is another set of paperwork) All the applications will be in the website I give you.

Depends on how you want to do it. Be sure you do all your homework before you go through the process. Make sure you have all the documents the applications ask for. Follow the guides on the CIC website and there is a phone number you can call if you have questions. Neither process is quick and there is no way to speed it up. Once your paperwork is submitted, don't constantly call them for an update...quick way for yours to go to the bottom of the pile.

Be warned though that if you apply from within Canada you have no appeal process if he is denied. (not that he would be, just in case it happens) The process costs about $1100 and that isn't including, the medicals, security check, finger printing, pictures etc... work history he needs. And just so you know unless he has a job offer in Canada he won't be working for a bit. So you have to be able to support him for a while. Make sure he has money saved up. With the spousal sponsorship you can apply for an open work permit. This is the only application you can apply for a work permit with. He can though go looking for a job and provided that he finds a job and the company does a labour assessment and it comes back ok. Then the application for a work visa has to be applied for outside Canada...example Buffalo, NY and then within a month or so he gets his work visa.

If you are doing the spousal application... once you sign the sponsorship agreement, you are financially responsible for him for anywhere from 3 years to 10 years. This is for basic needs as defined in the guide. Food/clothing/medical etc....

When you have everything put together, call your local immigration office and ask to speak to someone regarding your paper work. Tell them you just want to make sure you are submitting the right paper work

Well you know everything that I know...hope I didn't scare you but this is a long process. Don't think it is going to be done in a couple months.
