Maybe it got started as a reward by parents to get their kids to eat all of their food. But then the adults decided it was too good for only the kids, and they started eating it too.

Dessert comes from the French for "clear the table." Literally a food course after eating which traditionally was fruit or cheese. It also implied something eaten away from the table; perhaps while relaxing out of doors. After the growth of the middle classes in the 18th century and the huge growth of processed sugar and the subsequent foods, puddings and cakes ("sweets" or "afters") became popular -- imitating the fashion of the wealthy. Many eastern cultures do not traditionally have dessert since the "sweet" flavors of fruit are served in their main courses.

Because it tastes good.

Typically, we eat dessert after dinner moreso than lunch. I believe the purpose is to hold us over until breakfast the next morning.

That, and it makes the throwing up easier on the people with eating disorders.

After eating a meal I never have room for dessert. I guess I miss the best part.

So that we don't over-eat. Desserts are filling and make us want to stop craving more food and stop eating. No kidding, that is the reason.
