My problem is nobody has told him, should I? My grandpa is 84, (I am 36), and have lived with him a significant part of my life, it's a mexican thing, and our relationship has always been one of keeping the other one step ahead, no BS, with info about everything from presents, to my grandma or mom being pissed of at us. They have stopped all meds, except pain meds, and say he will live 5-7 days. I go see him every morning around 6:30am, that happens every day he's not home. Reason I need to know now is bcuz my grandma set up for his priest to come by tomorrow, and my grandpa may be uneducated but he isn't stupid by any means, I think he will figure it out. He has 3 sons, all local, and his help has been primarily by my grandma and 1 uncle, and by me whenever needed, but not on a regular basis, my grandma wouldn't allow it any other way, and neither would my grandpa, alzheimer's is one of many things. I'm not asking anyone to make a tough decision for me, but help with insight.

I dont know what to tell you, Just happened to run into this whole yahoo answers thing. Anyway, I think you should let him know, especially since you know he is not stupid and will figure something out anyway. Very few people in life know they are going to die. It usually comes by surprise. You should let your grandpa know, that way with what little sanity he has left he can make sure he is ready to meet his Maker. Is he is ready to meet Jesus? Being from a latino backround myself I know that the faith we have in God is what gives us hope, strength and peace during tough times. Your grandpa would appreciate the heads up and this will give him a chance to make sure he has made his peace with Jesus and is ready. Hope this helped, take care and may the Lord grant you peace.

There is nothing anyone can tell you, it depends how you feel in your heart and how you think your grandpa would take being told.
Look deep into your heart, if you think he would want to know, then tell him.
If you think it would make his last few days harder knowing, then keep it to yourself.
Don't put the burden of your pain on him, let him go in peace.
May God look over you all.
He is already looking after your grandpa, and will be taking him home soon.
Praying for you all.
GOD bless and help you through your time of need.
We love you

If your grandfather is really that close to death, he knows it. He doesn't need you or a doctor to tell him. I spent ten years as a hospice counselor, working with terminally ill people and their families, and while the families may be in denial, the dying person can sense when their time is coming. They seem to withdraw from the world and other people slowly.

What you can do is let him know that you love him, and listen to whatever he tries to tell you. If he tells you he's dying, don't deny it. You don't have to reply "Yes, you're dying", but don't contradict him either.

Good luck - he's lucky to have you close to him, and you're lucky to have him for so long!

You would probably feel more at peace with yourself if you were honest with him. He probably already knows, but I would find a way to gently tell him anyway. I know it will be very hard, but I think that since your relationship has always been "no BS," as you said, that it should continue to be that way.

Like you said, your Grandfather is not stupid. I don't feel that it will be necessary to tell him his diagnosis because he more than likely already knows. After all, it is his body, and he is probably aware of it's changes. One other thing, the time allotted to your Grandfather, may or may not be exact, so please don't terrorize him with the info. Most elderly people consider their death to be a homecoming .

The only thing I can suggest is pray for him and tell him how much you love him. Be honest with him, seeing as he will figure it out anyway. Make sure he knows that he is loved. I feel sorry for you. My prayers are with you.

It would be better if he hears it from someone he loves. Approach it cautiously, but yes, I would tell him. God bless you and your family. I pray for a painless death.
