Why med's? try to distract your dog when it hears thunder as a time to play. Maybe a game of tug with an old sock. Keep it's mind off the loud noise and pretty soon the problem has passed. In time it will head for a toy thinking the thunfer is play time...Say no to med's....It has worked for my dog....

hi
i don't know about over the counter meds to give the pup, but our dog has the same problem and we go to the vet and get tranquilizers. they are very inexpensive , considering we only need them for thunderstorms and during the fourth of July, we get 20 at a time and are about 5.00 for the twenty. you should definitely go to the vet to get something so they can be dosed according to need and weight. one tranquilizer lasts approximately 6 to 8 hours and they sleep. to some it may sound cruel, but our dog gets so upset she vomits and can't hold her water from the loud noises. i would much rather see her sleep peacefully instead of puking and peeing.

OTC medicines only give your dog a temporary relief may be. It is always recommended to condition him to loud sounds slowly and steadily aver a period of time say a few months.

You need to be close to him and pet him while making noises and provide re-assurance to him every time.

In petstores, they sell this stuff (I don't remember the name) that can calm your dog down. In Petsmart, it's in the same isle as the dog shampoos.

You can use Melatonin (1.5mg small dog, 3mg big dog) or DAP spray (spray it in to a bandana and tie it around his neck)
