Yeah, golf is a sport. But it can also be the equivalent to fat dudes drinking beer and playing softball. To hit a golf ball 350 yards straight everytime and anytime requires tremendous coordination and strength. Plus, to keep that up over 18 holes is a feat in itself. Even if you ride in cart, there's a big difference between your first swing and your last. I'd call it a sport because I've tried on and off for years to get it right, but never can I escape past newbie status.
If you really want to argue the validity of some sports using the 'sweat test' as a primary marker, look at billiards, poker, skeet shooting, darts, and some forms of auto racing. They're all activities that take intense concentration and skill to master, but the difference between winning and losing is based upon endurance of the mind.
In the end, I guess we're prone to call anything a sport that encompases breathing and thinking. However, some sports do have more gifted athletes than others.

It depends on what level you play the game. Tiger Woods works out at least as hard as your average baseball player, and walking 18 holes in the sun is not an easy thing; although the players have their caddies carry their clubs. Pros are forbidden to use cars. The game uses a ball, it is played out doors, it is played on a large field (or course), there are rules, there is a league that pays out money to the top players. I'm sure you can see at least some similarities to other professional sports. You also have to walk several miles during the course of a three to four hour round and then repeat the process for three to four days. All this and an incredible amount of mental pressure is placed on the athlete because they realize if they do not perform well they could face being ousted from the league or more likely lose a great deal of money.
Oh well I say this without ever playing the game.

Oh for sure. Although I sense a touch of sarcasm in your answer, I'll answer it cos I'm bored.
Put it like this. I'm a 3 handicap golfer, and I can tell you I eat like a horse, and golf is the only exercise I do. If I didnt play golf, I'd be the size of a house. After a half hour on the range, regardless of weather, I'm sweating, hard. Same for after a round of golf. I'm fit and healthy, but if your trying to hit a golf ball 280 yards plus for 4 1/2 hours, you're gonna be pooped. I hit that thing damned hard. Try it.

Apparently you've never played golf or you'd know that walking 18 holes in the cold WILL cause you to break a sweat. Only the Country Club set d rive golf carts. Most purists walk.
