A car with 2 wheel drive only has 2 wheels turning, either the 2 front wheels or the 2 rear wheels.
A car or SUV with 4 wheel drive has all 4 wheels turning, the front wheels and the rear wheels are always turning.
4 wheel drives are usually on trucks or SUV's, but there are quite a few cars with 4 wheel drive as well. 4 wheel drive offers far better traction in all kinds of ruff road conditions, like snow, mud and deep sand.

This is a list of most four wheel drive systems:
There are two basic types of four wheel drive systems, first you have what is typically known as a Part Time system in which the front and rear drive shafts are locked together this system is good really only for sand, snow and other loose materials and not for driving on roads. A Full Time four wheel drive system is designed for use on roads because of the addition of a center differential which will allow the drive shafts to turn at different speeds. The two systems described above can be had with a two speed transfer case which will have a low range for steep grades. An All wheel drive system is the same as above but without the low range.

Two wheel vehicle is a vehicle where the power to move is either powered by the front or the rear(trucks) wheels only one set of whels moves. A four wheel drive vehicle is where all four wheels are powered to move the vehicle and all four wheels spin. There is also all wheel drive which is not a four wheel drive vehicle, is where power to the a third and/or fourth wheel are engaged in certain conditions but the driveshaft is constantly moving making it an all wheel drive.

along with only using two wheels for power, two wheel drives have a weaker power train. A four wheel drive has more power in the 4 wheel drive setting, not only because you are using 4 wheel power but a heightened horse power rating as well.

A two wheel drive would get stuck in the mud while the four wheel drive would be able to get through it! Cause all 4 wheels are spinning!

All wheel pressure automobiles and four-wheel pressure automobiles function on a similar concepts. There are different determning factors notwithstanding. Actualy maximum automobiles have what's termed an "open differential". which skill they have in straight forward words one "pressure wheel" until eventually equiped with a locker or posi differential. So technically maximum 4-wheel pressure automobiles use one pressure wheel contained in the rear and one interior the front even as in 4-wheel pressure mode. maximum automobiles do no longer use a posi or locker up the front by using the indisputable fact that is demanding to reveal because the exterior wheel contained in the turn might want to rotate swifter. even as accessible to have a locker or posi contained in the rear this is unlikely or consumer-friendly to operate with a posi interior the front. even as no longer no longer accessible this is been finished. As to all wheel pressure the front may be the numerous pressure wheels with the rear coupled by a viscous move. no matter if 2 or 4 wheels are being pushed remember on the variety of differential.

a four wheel drive can provide more torque because it has four tyres of available traction thus giving it an edge in slippery surfaces.
however a two wheel drive is more fuel economical because it has lesser mechanical friction to overcome.
