I know. It's like saying that the Lord of the Rings is a true story because it refers to itself (Bilbo writes the red book and passes it on to Frodo).
Fiction is fiction, nothing more. But at least it's a great way to spot the morons out there. Just find out who believes it's fact and bingo, you got 'em!

Honestly, it is because often times people ask Christians who are not experienced in using history and science to compare and contrast scripture.

Most Christians, heck - even most ministers, do not have the necessary training in ancient writing styles, or even in foreign languages (greek, hebrew) to begin to dip into that kind of "prove it" discussion. What happens then is they fall back on all they have heard from others, which quite honestly, may not be much.

So here's an interesting question... would you ask a first year physics student to prove the theory of relativity??? of course not. he hasn't the necessary skill. Would you ask a student who has not yet taken algebra to complete geometric proofs??? that would be silly because you no he couldn't do it... he hasn't learned enough yet.

At the same time, both of those types of proofs require a certain level of understanding from the person asking the question. Could a person who has a 5th grade level of education rightly demand of a high school freshman to prove an agebraic equation is true? Probably not. Because that 5th grader doesn't understand the material that is required for the answer.

So, it is difficult, at best, to try to PROVE the Bible is true to someone who is unwilling to accept the possibility that it may be... and it is even harder to PROVE the Bible's credibility to someone who doesn't understand the intricacies involved in the text and the style.

If a person really wants to pose that question, I suggest they start with the book "Why I Believe" by D. James Kennedy. At least be prepared to understand the material before being eager to debunk what someone might or might not know.

A more appropriate question would have been...

"Why do "some" Christians refer to the bible when asked to prove the credibility of the bible itself..."

The answer is, because they believe it so deeply, where else are they going to go? And the simple fact is they don't all do it. They're individuals and they all do it differently.

As a Bible believing Christian I would say if the Bible is not true, than death will be the same for both of us, the grave. But if it is true and you are not a believer, than death will mean life in heaven for believers and hell for the none believers! I wouldn't take any chances if I were you! Not to mention eternal life begins here on this earth the minute you place your faith in Jesus Christ. You may want to read the Gospel of John and pray to God to show you whether or not it is true. Jesus has changed my life for the better in so many ways. Christians only want you to have the same peace, happiness and eternal life that they now have because of His Grace.

The Bible proves itself. Not to mention doctors have found that diagnosis in the Bible on diseases are accurate. Archeological evidence continually prove the Bible. And just plain common sense.

I like what one of the old preachers of yesteryear said when asked to defend the Bible. "Why should I when I can just stand back and let the Bible defend itself."

I prefer to argue with people out of reasoning because if they don't believe the Bible it's like arguing with a wall. You can make a persuasive argument but the wall isn't going to change its mind.

If you ask me a Biblical question, I'll use the Bible to answer it. If you ask me to prove the credibility of the Bible, I'll use history and logic.

They have no other choice.

Only people with out the logic skills to realize how twisted that logic is would continue to use it and remain a fundamentalist. Anyone who has realized it is bad logic is no longer a fundamentalist.

It is self-selecting.

Someone said:

"There actually is a lot of non-biblical historical documents that agree with the history in the Bible--Josephus being one. "

Actually, there are more sources that disagree. And Josephus, contrary to what you pastor may have told you, mere relates a few stories of the early followers. There are a few passages where he seems to call Jesus the son of god, but even christian scholars have to admit that these are VERY suspicious, since Josephus never converted. They were added in by christian copyists later on. (No original Josephus exists.)

When a christian quotes Josephus, it is because he hasn't read him. If a christian thinks that the majority of 1st century writings confirm chrisitianity, it is because they haven't read enough.

Why do you assert the Bible has no credibility? because technological expertise has shown particular interpretations of it incorrect? nicely perchance the technological expertise is defective--or perchance the translation is defective. interior the places the position there is not any room for dispute, the Bible has been shown truly credible. Even interior the places the position it once appeared to lack credibility, mutually with the existence of Nazareth interior the time of Jesus, it has on account that been shown precise. (extra excavation round city of Nazareth unearthed first-century tombs interior the section, organising its existence for the time of Jesus' existence.) besides, i do not ignore that those who do not believe as I do might want to reject the validity of the Bible for his or her perspectives to make sense, subsequently i do not use the Bible as a source to teach there's a God. i take advantage of technological expertise. case in factor, evolution has been tested to be not achievable without a fashion designer. Thousands of years of history have proved it true

Billions of people have believed in it throughout history and given their lives defending it, because they believed it.

No matter how hard you try, you simply cannot get away from the fact that it's the most-read book ever.

12 men gave their lives believing Jesus is the Christ ... they all died horrible deaths ... would they have done that if it weren't true?

Should I keep going? I've yet to refer to anything really biblical, and I've just gotten started.

You are wrong hon, Christians don't have to refer to the Bible to prove it's credibility. We just don't want to argue with you at all :)

You can refer to the bible the same way that you can refer to your VCR manual. How do you know that the VCR manual is credible? Because when you do what the manual tells you to do, you get the results that you want.

Likewise, when you obey the teachings of the bible you will also receive everything that the bible promises.

The prophecy included in the Bible speaks for itself, but feel free to check it against historical documents. Just for fun, read through Daniel and make the correlation to how long Israel was to be punished, and then check when it became a nation again. Interesting stuff....
