This is the wrong question. My answer is "unask the question!" Back up the tape and erase it.
I'm not being cute or iconocastic or intellectually tricky here. I am inferring, beyond reasonable doubt, that people DON'T KNOW why they answer questions about others' private lives. Part of it is morbid curiousity. There may be a humanitarian component, and when people speak from their own experience about having made a mistake along the lines of the question, it shows that they are sharing hard-earned experience. Some of it seems to be the explosion of morbid curiosity into gloating, the "Hahaha, I missed that pothole!" sort of posting.
There is also an enormous component of bored people thinking out loud anonymously. When this is not a humanitarian impulse, and often it is not, I suspect one of two motives. FIRST, the post is made to evangelize about the poster's value system, which is to say that the poster advocates his value system as a solution to the problem being posed. SECOND, the poster may be using the question and the limelight in order to practice being sincere.
Which leads to this conundrum, the reason why I suggest the question be unasked: Can you differentiate, reliably, between unrehearsed empathy, practiced sincerity and outright b*llsh*t? Read my source below (it's so short you can get through it in less than 90 minutes) before you give the 10 points to anyone else. This rocks.

I believe that there are quite a bit of people that do care what someone is going through to help them. When I first got on Y!A it was to ask a question and I got all caring responses that I decided to stay on. Then as time when on I did see that as school got out for summer there were more answers and questions that were just geared for the points. Of course, it doesn't mean that the younger generation doesn't care, I believe that there are those that do. There are also those that want to only be at the top of the board. But if you look at our leaders, they have a good percentage of being selected best answerer.

Doesn't matter private Q or public Q I care to answer if I am interested to the question and can give the reasonable answer. My answer may be helpful or not I just express what I think the best. I hope most of the ppl here are not coz of the points.. actually what is this points for??.. they are here to express their opinion and feelings and get a smile when their answers are worth and noticed by others... when u got no points to ask a Q then give some best answers to help others n get help urself to put ur question.. that's natural..
There may be others who answers just for points.. If we are here to answer just to get the points then keep trying to answer as many Q as u can regardless what Q it is and dint bother about ur answer... But keep in mind that some Q really needs good answer that can help others..

I do care.... Some people just get on here to mess with others but there are some good people who do care and want to help others. I am one of those good people who try to help in anyway I can. At this time in my life I am a stay at home mom and when the children are in bed or out playing this is where I come to try to help people who are having a hard time and need to find some true answers. I will research things for people and I will edit my posts but other than that IO can't speak for the others on here that just want to give people a hard time.

I don't care about the points although a lot of people do. I really care about the serious questions. You will realize that if you look at some of the serious questions I've answered. I do occasionally answer some questions that aren't serious. And I always end up reading a lot more than I answer.
I like the feeling of knowing that I can help someone with a problem and maybe even make them smile.

Yes I think people really do care, I do but I also think some questions are to personal or the person need more help than anyone on here can give and I will not answer those questions. If I do give an answer I try and be sincere about it.

you mention telling people who really care about people's private lives to get lives of their own? and you somehow imply that people who just want points need not get a life because they somehow are cool? well here's a reality check: if you sit at the computer all day trying to get points for no real reason, you are the one who needs a life. what are points anyway? what do you think is going to happen, you hit level 7 and you win a million dollars? i've got news for you. there's no difference in the levels.

I'm one the people who care. It's not like I take others' problems to bed with me or anything. Some care some don't. If you don't care cool but if you did have a problem and wanted advice, I'd be someone who'd give you good advice that would/may really help you. Helping others should be on everyone's list!

I do answer on people's private life becasue I want to give support and it wouldn't hurt to know and help people a little even if we are miles away.
But some people of course don't give a *** and are just bored so they just play with people's emotions. The problem is, people shouldn't put their emotions on a computer or even ask strangers but for despereate ones, it's their only option if they have no one else.
I hope you like my answer.
