Since you mention optical zoom, I assume you are looking for a camera with BIG optical zoom.

I love my camera. Its a Panasonic Lumix FZ30 with 12x optical zoom. With that much zoom, it's hard to hold it steady at full zoom so the camera needs to have image stabilization, which the FZ30 has. It also has a zoom ring on the lens barrel instead of just a switch to control the zoom. This allows quick and precision zooming.

My wife also loves her camera, which is a Sony Cybershot H5, a little smaller and more convenient to use. It also has image stabilization, but no zoom ring (it uses a switch to control the zoom). Hers also has an extending lens unlike my Panasonic which has a fixed lens.

Before making this kind of investment, you need to do lots of research. A camera is a very personal thing, and everyone will recommend a different one. With any suggestions you receive, I suggest you check them out with a professional review service. Two good reviewers that I like are:
http://dpreview.com and
http://stevesdigicams.com

They both give exhaustive reviews for many cameras and give you their conclusions.

Kodak has a nice, affordable camera that has two lenses. This gives you great optical zoom as it switches from one to the other seamlessly.
