If you are looking for practical self defense, leave the Aikido school and never go back. Aikido translated to English is WWE. Go train in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai that is a great combo. Judo has practical throws and is a lot of fun. Forget Aikido it is a total waste of time, a dance class would be just as useful.

The ground & pound style seems to be the most successful. This style is based on wrestling techniques. BJJ is essential, but wrestling is more effective these days, now that fighters are aware of the submissions and can defend against them. It's not like the old days, when Royce took every one by surprise. Look at Hughes v. Gracie. The master of BJJ against the wrestler with other well rounded skills. We all know how that ended.

BJJ is good for MMA, but on the street against multiple opponents it's garbage.
It would be best to go back to the roots for street. Which by that I mean, traditional Japanese jiujutsu. Or if you want to fast forward a little from the traditional Japanese Jiujutsu I would say Judo would be more street wise. If you're wanting to do best on the street, study Judo and muay thai.
Trust me, you throw someone onto the street and they land on there back, head, shoulder, etc..., they won't be getting up to quick. And that goes for a BJJ practitioner as well.

Just master your art and be good at it.
BTW, there are martial arts that look soft but can inflict great damage.
There's is always someone better than you or Matt Hughes or Gracie or whoever else. I bet that they may know something other than JJ.

JJ is the ultimate fighting system.... if you're fighting only one person. Other than that, you're at a strict disadvantage fighting more than one person if you do JJ. Most fights involve more than one person. JJ is great for MMA tourneys but bad for self defense with more than one person. You're better off learning TKD if you're going to be fighting many people while being alone.

Better for what?
BJJ is good for Mixed Martial Arts stuff or other sports fighting.
Krav Maga (Kapap, etc) is prolly best for a proper fighting system.
Many other systems have different uses as well, Capoera will get you amazingly fit, different kung fu based systems are good for focus and balance, etc, etc

BJJ is awesome, but a smart or strong fighter is hard to catch. The best is to have well rounded skills in all situations.
