Most of them just get disconnected, but the recharge-ables are just left to run down. Now your less common 9 volt batteries often get abandoned before they're even given a chance to shine (in a torch of course) and can usually be found at the back of the third drawer down in the utility room. A lot get thrown on the fire too. Personally though I think that's a bit harsh, don't you?

it depends.....I used to have to run backgrounds for work...and I seen them as everything from misdemeanors to felonies. Felonies were mostly the severe cases where the person attacked was severely beaten. My ex and his friend beat up someone, bashing in their face...literally. His friend got probation and fines. It depends on where you live I think and what the laws are and what physical damage is done. The worse it is for them, the worse it is for you.
