I have both breeds. They are both great. Pit Bulls need a firm hand to let them know who is boss, if you are not used to this temperament of dog, I would get a female. Make sure you find a breeder that breeds pits for good temperaments. as for boxers, they are very hyper when they are in their teen years and can seem a bit overwhelming. Boxers have a life expectancy of ten years because their pushed back noses can cause breathing problems, but my boxer Danzig is proving all the statistics wrong, he is thirteen now. And just to add to all of the stupid people that answered this question, pits do make great kid dogs too, I have four kids, 16, 13, and twins that are 12. They have grown up with pits all of their lives, and NEVER ONCE did my pits show any sort of aggression to any of them. They are not bred to fight or be mean, it is the stupid people that raise them that way and make them mean, and its the stupid people who don't have all of the facts that say stupid comments like they should be banned, get a lab they are nicer, tell that to my daughter after she got chased down the road on her bike by a lab that was trying to bite her. If you can't tell, I get a little touchy when it comes to pit bulls.

Ok man if your looking for a very protective family dog go with the boxer I have one and it will not let my daughter be approached by anyone she is awesome. Boxers are also friendly and easy to train. Very smart dogs.
Pitts are also very awesome dogs in their own right. I wouldn't say they are a good family dog but they require a lot of work and some obedience training won't hurt. They require you to dominate them or they will dominate you which could cause a lot of problems. Your home insurance may also go up because they are considered a dangerous breed.......although the Little Rascals had one! Anyways there is just more to getting a pit than just going out and getting one.
You may also try getting a doberman. Which is the fiercest protecting dog I've had a privelage to own. They are completely loyal to their owners! Very smart also but their natural instinct to be protective is amazing (bred for security and it shows). But at any rate be sure to do your research because I would hate to see yet another good pit bull end up in a pound.

Boxer all the way. Pitts have a heritary trait that there sckull is too small for there brain which cause them to eventually go nuts and many turn very mean. It could take the dog many years to rach this point and or it may dye with out ever reaching it but the posablity is always there. and you dont want a pitt to bite you cause once a pitt bites its gaws lock and you have to break the gaw to get ti off and thats just mean. where im from they made it a law that you have to get your pitts fixed so that they can not breed this was a comprimise to making the breed iligal here. you can teven import then in here anymore. so of the two a boxer is the best oh rottys and great danes are great dogss too. if you want a "big" dog try to ster clear of Dobys for they have the same problem with the skcull and brain that the pitts do too. and chows are just unpredictable to begin with. If you have to have a big dog go with a boxer, a rotty, a great dane, a hound, a st bernard, a shepard, a Lab, or a mutt, Mutts are the very best breed as long as they dont have pitt or chow in them.

I ahve a couple of Pits. They have strong body oder and require more bathing and they shed alot.
I love them though.
Does size matter where you live? If so then a boxer might not be the ticket for ou.
They can get rather large and have a lot of the same traits as a pit does. But you cant go wrong either way. Both are damn good breeds of dog. and to the chick that says pits bite to much,, check your stats! German Shepards bite more people per year than pits or boxers.

I owned a pitbull, he was the greatest dog I ever had. He loved children and adults. The only problems I had out of him was he hated other male dogs*but he probably would have stopped that if I got him nuetered. Other than that he was a great dog. Pits are very loyal, friendly(if the owner treats them well), and very VERY smart! I am sorry but you people saying that pits arent good dogs you should own one and find out before you start talking SH*T about them. NOT ALL PITS ARE MEAN!!!!!!! ITS THE OWNERS THAT MAKE THEM MEAN BY FIGHTING THEM AND ABUSING THEM. GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT A$$HOLES

As for a boxer, I really dont know much about them and have never owned one before, so I am not going to say much about owning one. My best advice is to see what you like for you not ask people what you should get. Go to a local shelter and see if you can play with a pitbull or a boxer and see what you like better. The dog has to fit you and you have to fit the dog if not it makes your life hard to handle if you are not suited to what the dog needs. Good luck on finding your perfect best friend....

I currently have a fostered pit. She is adorable, sweet, and a little timid compared to most pits, which are fairly aggressive. I have never fostered a mean pit. This one has been with us for a year. I used to breed boxers.
having listed my qualifications here are my feelings: Pits need to chew and chew and chew. We are currently trying to break her of the habit using alum, hot sauce, and commercial no chew sprays. She has eaten 3 garden hoses, 3 remote controls, an extension cord, 3 comforters and 3 pillows. We stopped giving her stuffed toys in case we were confusing her (pillows and comforters). She has also destroyed in about 2 1/2 minutes every dog toy we have ever bought for her, with the exception of the "kong" toys. Every pit I have fostered and every one I know who has a pit have chewing problems with them. They can be trained out of it, but it's a long hard (or possibly professional) road. On the flip side, the have all been good with my 2 yr old grandson who lives with all these dogs, and I've never had a problem from a pit in regard to him. Boxers are sweet, even tempered, and love children. They may gut their stuffed toys, but tend to leave the rest of the house alone and don't have this need to chew up everything. If you are not experienced with dogs, I would go with a boxer. But remember big dogs=big exercise. You need to be prepared to take them running or play ball for a couple of hours every day - they are working dogs and the more you encourage them to be active the better they will behave for you.

Pit. They are easier to train. If it is well trained and socialized, it will be a totally awesome dog. That is if you get it as a puppy. My husband says a mastiff is a great big dog to get. Boxers never seem to leave the puppy stage. Personally the I think the best is a golden past the puppy stage. Check out the Breed Rescues in your local area. There are rescues that rescue only specific breeds of dogs. You may find the perfect match in a little older animal.

My husbands cousin has both. The Pit is actually more tolerant of the kid they have then the Boxer who growls. Also a note to you that don't like Pits, His Boxer has shown himself to be more aggressive when it comes to other dogs then the Pit ever has. They are great dogs both of them and the owner is a great dog person but it is just interesting. Keep this in mind. Pits get more grief, I know I have one. it takes alot of responsibility and dedication to own one. Boxers are very hyper and need alot of exercise and are very hard headed as they both are. UP to you though. their both good dogs.

I have a boxer/German Shepard X /Mastiff (most likely)- she's awesome!!!

Great personality, smart, not spastic or hyper - great dog!!!

Pits I've known aren't as hyper as boxers, but if you're really active you'd be fine with a boxer. If you're not very active but are ok with a really big dog - go for an English Mastiff - the gentle giant or a Great Dane.

Sorry, am partial to big dogs - my little princess stands at almost 29" at the shoulder.

I have a boxer now for 2 years. I bought him when he was a baby and now he is really big. He is the best. He loves children and gets along with 2 other dogs in my home. He is also a house dog. Never had any problems training him nor any problems when him tearing up my house. Just keep the shoes picked up. He also sleeps in the bed with my 10 year old.
