I have a lighter brown hair; it has been dyed many times before, but not for a few years. I was just wondering if the color would stay good? I've never dyed it black before. My hair is fairly thick and it takes certain colors well (takes blonde good, brown good, but not red).

Thanks!

Thanks for the great feedback, but I just figured I should add that I am most definitely going to a salon to get this done, I would never dye my hair at home.

Your hair will take the black fine. You are depositing color, not lifting, so the damage will be minimal. It will be black. But when you want the black out, when you are bored with that too, it will be hard to get out. And you won't be able to safely do it yourself. You will need to go to a salon and pay near 100 bucks to get it removed so that you still have hair. Think twice before you do it, you'll be sorry if you dont!

Whether or not the black will look good on you really depends on your skin tone. If you have pale or light olive skin, think twice before dying it black. Trust me; I dyed mine black a few years ago and it took me 3 years to get rid of it without totally killing my hair, and while it was black I always looked ill. If that's not a concern then I'd go ahead and try it. Try to stick to well known name brands; Feria, Garnier 100% Colour, and L'Oreal Hydrience work really well, and don't damage your hair. It will take more time to rinse out the dye than usual, and don't use light coloured towels or wear white shirts immediately afterwards because the colour may run slightly. Also ask a friend to check your coverage with the dye when applying it so that you don't miss any spots since it's really noticeable. Other than that, have fun. I've been dying my hair for the past 10 years now, various colours and brands, and love it!

You betchya the color will stay. In fact, it will stay so well that when you finally decide to dye your hair a color lighter than black, you'll have to go to a salon to have the dye professionally removed! Take it from someone who knows - color removers you can buy at Sally's or Wal Mart will not work too well.

So, I say go for it! But just remember that it's not as easy to take out the black dye as it is to dye it in the first place! Good luck and have fun!

If you dye your hair black, go to a good beauty salon. Black is a hard color to make look "good" Personally, I think nothing looks worse than the fake black. I have thick hair too, but that should be a plus for you.

Dyed black hair is not attractive at all. Even the darkest hair is not completely black but a combination of browns and blacks. My daughter just had dark brown, dark red, and blonde highlights to her light brown hair --- it turned out gorgeous!

Hi I'm not sure if you seen my latest question posted recently, but what I tried to do a dark brown is now black and I absolutely hate it! I have a tan and had a nice tone with my recent lighter hair, now I just look pale and wow! It's just so drastic, so if you do decide to do it, make sure you're prepared, cause it's quite a change... trust me!

I don't think you should. All those chemical treatments, even a few, damage your hair a little every time you get them done. Besides, just be happy with the hair color you have! Brown is beautiful!

Your hair color is an *ethnic fingerprint*. Women that dye their hair blonde are basically trying to look 'more Nordic' than they really are. The only time you should dye your hair is when you start to go grey when you're older, and when you do, dye it it's natural color.

First you should contemplate on why you want to change your appearance. You should then learn to be comfortable with yourself and who you are, what you look like. Why care what others think about your appearance? If they do care if your hair is brown or black or blond are these people healthy to associate with?
