Try counting backwards from 500, or counting sheep. I read somewhere that if you count sheep the right side of your brain is used for counting and the left side is used for visualization of the sheep jumping. Using both sides of the brain helps to tire you out!

I don't know any tricks to help you fall asleep, but I have read somewhere that if you're sleepy and can't fall asleep, forcing yourself to go to sleep does nothing but make you more not sleepy and keeps you awake...so try doing something until you fall asleep.

try meditation. A very simply one I use is that you get comfortable in bed, take several deep breathes focus on your breathing. The you start from your feet and move upward doing the following...

Think to your self that your feet are very heavy, that they become heavier every second. They are so heavy that they are like concrete. Once you feel your feet become heavy move to your calves, and so on until your full body is so heavy that you can not move - if you get that far.

Also Classical music is a great soother to get your mind in a more relaxed mood.
