This is a very broad question, an analysis of which depends on goals and views of individuals providing an answer. If ones efforts here are predicated on the assumptions that, "the rest of the world ( none American ) doesn't care about innocent peoples lives at stake" and that, this question is being "asked nicely", then almost any answer given, in any context, would, it seems to me, be not useful, in determining a course of action. Perhaps we can set some lower bound on the time "we" should spend educating ourselves about international relations in general. I personally devote an hour via CSPAN, current news print, and historical reads. From this small effort, I can say, with conviction, that the future belongs to those who take land, hold it, and use its resources to reproduce, and as our knowledge increased, so do, in a spirit of respect for the unknown.

Unfortunately, the best solution is the one the US cannot indulge in due to its ethical philosophy.

I was requested to elaborate. We cannot fight fanaticism because no matter what you do it will backfire. You fight back you prove them right, you back down you show weakness. The world's nightmare is a fanatical or aggressive nation with nuclear capabilities and missiles that can reach around the world. My comment was sarcastic in that i insinuated that eradication is the best possible response to these countries. I then mentioned that the US was philosophically and ethically opposed to preemptive strikes. well, this is mostly true. There have been a few times in recent years where preemptive operations were launched. Yet when pressed about it, the government will still say that we have never done this. In years past when a country wanted to boost its economy, it would start a fight. But big weapon have changed the stakes of this game. We do not need flaky governments with itchy trigger fingers. Too many innocents will pay the price. So my comment, while subtle, was intended to point out the impossibility of our situation with regard to these nations.

I think we should wait & see. The Defense Department was unhappy with the "supposed" show of force by North Korea today, but seeing as it was little more than a fireworks show, we can wait. The medium range could not even hit Japan & the long range failed after 42 seconds. Hopefully the UN will give major sanction as both Japan & US requested & we will see if force is needed.

Iran is testing & they may be the first of the 2 to fail.
Unfortanately, these will not be soldier wars but weapons only.
With their nuclear weapons, we have no way to sneak 100,000 soldiers into their country.
Nuclear Weapons are hard to reholster, however it is the hard job of the President to protect the USA at all cost. We lost 45,000 soldiers in one at Gettysburg, we can not lose that number of civilians through a nuclear weapon.

I think we have time to try & reason with unreasonable leaders.

I say we consider depleting our nuclear arsenal one at a time, starting with N. Korea and then moving to Iran. (only kidding).

I think we have to use the best diplomacy possible when dealing with these two nations. They and us have gigantic differences in our philosophies. I think this could escalate into the type of situation that we had during the Cold War.

War is not the answer, but neither is doing nothing. I'm not Henry Kissinger-esque, although I wish I were for our sake.

It's going to take an awful lot of diplomacy to sidestep the landmines that are sure to exist between us and them.

I don't understand what you mean when you say "the rest of the world doesn't care about innocent peoples lives at stake"

What are you talking about?

North Korea is surrounded by US-friendly countries and their isolation doesn't help them a lot. Iran is a bigger problem since we need their oil. Americans should start relying on other forms of energy sources since we depend on foreign oil and we don't have very very very good relations in the Middle East. Yes, we're tight with Saudi Arabia but it's kinda sketchy.

Nothing about either one....for N Korea it was a missle test, the US does it all the time...and Iran has so much internal conflict their hopes of becoming a world power are delusional....some of you actual think N Korea would launch a nuclear strike on the US? Get real would you....they know they would get everything they launched plus more back at them...it is a no win for them

We should get an Asian colition to help us put North Korea in its place if nescary, made up of China, Japan, and South Korea; we may finally be forced to reunite Korea. With Iran, we should try to hold them off. It would be best to defuse both situations diplomaticly, however, those countries are run by nut jobs. Its up to them if we take military action.
