VLC Media Player will play .avi files, and pretty much anything else that isn't protected by DRM. As for burning, just copy them onto CD as data.

almost all the video player can play .avi files
but it's not good idea to copy .avi in cd because it takes too much space (it's uncompressed)
covert .avi into mpg or wmv
slightly lower quality but compare this
a 3 min video file(high quality) avi = 800 MB , wmv = 30 MB
