Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Poodles, and other such breeds have a different kind of coat..Its more like Hair than fur..It sheds very little if any...They require alot of groomong from a Professional groomer and this helps as well with keeping them in good shape, I'm not sure about the Allergy part but my Lhasa and Shih Tzu's that I had in the past didnt shed at all..My short haired lab sheds everywhere!...I would call a Vet first they may still have dander that cause allergies..I hope it works out..Shih Tzus are Great Family Pets

All dogs shed some hair, just like humans shed hair.
Most people are allergic to the dog's dander or saliva. Although some people with allergies do seem to do well with dogs that need to be cut on a regular basis - like poodles.
The AKC website: akc.org has a page about hypoallergenic dogs - (just do a search on allergies)
My husband was allergic to a german shepherd but has been fine with a lhasa apso.
Each persons allergies are different also - I recommend visiting a local breeder and have your wife hold the dog close to her face to see how she reacts before you purchase one.

Shih tzu are wonderful dogs, and I have one. However, they require extensive grooming, both brushing and bathing at home, and professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. They shed very little, however, they are not necessarily considered hypoallergenic. You should be around them somewhere to test it out before you buy one. The best dogs considered to be hypoall. are poodles and bichons, but even those may cause problems in certain people.

I have a Shih Tzu and they do shed. As long as those dogs have their furry hairs, they will surely shed. It is pretty natural for all hairs to shed, for people and dogs alike. The only time my dog did not shed was when I had her hair shaved because I thought it was the reason why I am having asthma. :)

The only dog I've come across that has minimal shedding is the poodle. If you don't want such a dippy dog, go with a labradoodle or a goldenoodle. Those are crosses, and they tend to be big, but they shed the least.

I had a shih tzu/bichon frise mix that didn't shed at all. I have severe allergies and she didn't bother me at all. She also didn't smell nor did she leave your hands oily after petting her. I highly recommend looking into this cross breed. Sometimes they are called teddy Bear dogs or Shicons.

One of my close friends have one and she is a sweet, sweet pet.... she doesn't really shed like a short hair, you just need to keep them brushed and groomed like any dog with long hair... they really seem loyal and do have great personalities......I think you would be very happy.......

I have a Shih Tszu and she doesn't shed her fur at all. She does have dander though, but ALL animals have that. I have terriable allergies and mine are bad at all with my little Lola.

Yes, they do.
They don't have an undercoat, like labs and huskies, and the fur is more "hair-like", but they do shed it.
(Llasa Apso's have hair as opposed to fur. They don't shed. But you have to comb or brush that hair every day!!)
