Spend a few days in Bangkok first. It's a must:
At least see the grand Palace, go out on Sukhumvit Road (check out http://www.bangkokrecorder.com for more info on that), go shopping at Siam Square (the biggets shopping area now in South East Asia, its amazing). You migt wanna do ther shopping at the end of your trip though.

Then you have the choice of going up North or down South.
I very much recommend to you going to Krabi. Its beautiful and not to crowded with tourists. But even on Samui you will find quiter areas (or busy party areas if you prefer that). Phuket is not really my thing.

If you are into diving go visit "Ko Tao". Ko Phi Phi is another nice island that can be easily reached from Krabi.

In the North you should visit Chiang Mai, Lampang or Chiang Rai for a completely different kind of Thailand.

After visiting Bangkok, you should fly or take a train to Chingmai. In Chiangmai, you should go to a mountain called Doi Suthep which has a temple up there or Doi Pui. Chiangmai Zoo has a couple pandas and some penguins, you should go see them too. There are two malls in Chiangmai; go to both if you have time. You can get some fruits from local markets and do shopping at the walking street on Sunday nights. You can get to each Upper North province by the Greenbus. Hi, Thailand is quite a big place for you to cover. I wonder what your key interests are? There are 76 provinces and a number of them have their unique attractions, so unless you have the time and is willing to go to all corners of the country to see all the recommended sights.

Look at the recommended websites others had provided and see what catch your interest. If you like, you can email me to help suggest possible self-package tours around the country. You can get me at tongbn@yahoo.co.uk.

Get out of Bangkok as early as possible....

Try and get to the North, take a night train up (pay the extra for a bunk) to Chiang Mai and get a taxi to Chiang Rai, go on some trekking their in the jungle (you can organise this in Chiang Mai)...

When you need a 'heavily overloaded with tourists with overrated prices fix' head on back down to the south of Thailand and cruise the beach areas.

the hotels and shopping are amazing. You have to visit the Emporium shopping center. It's really nice and classy, and there are so many stores there. The Shangrila hotel is also amazing. It's a 4-star hotel, and the food is wonderful.
