Its probably part of the restaurant's "theme" because not all cooks wear "those crazy printed pants" or because of personal preferrence.
In many cases, the chef uniform (pants and jacket) are provided by the restaurant, and are sometimes provided by a linen company to the restaurant who consequently wash and replace the linens and uniforms in 1 shipment. In this case, the pants were probably chosen for a theme or just because it looks nice.
In other cases, the cooks bring their clothes with them and wash it at home, in which case the printed pants are probably because they like the design of the pants or are comfortable.
Sometimes i've seen cooks just put a chef jacket on top of a t-shirt and jeans... especially when they're running late :-)

Cooks wear those crazy printed pants in large part because they disguise smatterings of food, but also because they are loose and comfortable, and provide a busy, multitasking cook with the mobility he or she requires when working in a frenzied kitchen.

LOL Good question! I have wondered the same thing myself because they are so ugly, but I agree with the others. They would be good for hiding stains. But, if I were a cook I wouldn't wear them.

To hide any stains that get on them.Have no idea how it started, but that is the main purpose of them.
