The Islamic equivalent of Satan is a supernatural being known as Iblis. Now, Iblis is not a fallen angel like Satan. In Islamic theology, angels do not possess free will but are more or less Allah's robot servants. Iblis is a different kind of supernatural being: a Jinn. Jinn are beings of fire. They possess a limited sort of free will in that, unlike humans, are certain of Allah's existence but are still capable of disobeying Him. Jinn are very much like humans in a way in that they eat, marry, die, et cetra. Jinn however exist on a dimension that humans cannot come into contact with. Jinn may however manifest themselves in the physical world and this supposedly explains poltergeist activity, reports of ghosts, et cetra. They possess supernatural powers such as incredible speed and the ability to possess people. Jinns may or may not disobey God. Evil jinn are known as Shayateen. (plural; singular is Shaitan) Evil people can call up Shayateen to do their bidding - at the cost of their place in the afterlife. Iblis used to be a pious Jinn and was even holier than the Angels. However, when Allah created Adam, the first man, that was when things went bad. Adam amazed the populace of Heaven with his intelligence and awareness of nature. Allah commanded the Angels and Iblis to bow to Adam as a sign of respect. Iblis refused, saying that he was greater than them. He was then expelled from Allah's grace. He was later sent to Earth after tempting Adam and Eve into eating from the Forbidden Tree and was condemned to Hell. He was given one last chance for mercy and he refused, vowing to take down all of humanity with him. Allah then let Iblis go, saying that His followers would not be mislead by Iblis.
