Has to do with their vows: poverty, chastity and obedience. The habit also serves as a direct and constant reminder of those vows.

Perfectae caritatis:

The religious habit, as a symbol of consecration, must be simple and modest, at once poor and becoming. In addition, it must be in keeping with the requirements of health, and it must be suited to the times and place and to the needs of the apostolate. The habits, both of men and women, which are not in conformity with these norms, ought to be changed (17).

Code of Canon Law:

Religious are to wear the habit of the institute determined according to the norm of proper law as a sign of their consecration and as a testimony of poverty (Canon 669, 1)

Implications:

Please come up and talk to you and will ask you to pray for them. They're beautiful implications...

Also, I wonderful Sister once told me that even an atheist, when they see a Sister in a habit - for a split second, the atheist thought about God....

It depends on the order that they belong, for example the Carmelite Nun's wear a brown habit much like the monks. Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word wear white like a nurse because that is their vow, Corporal works of Mercy . Sisters of torture and hater of the little kids wear the black and white, they beat me up every day!

It's like they are all the same, no differences among them because then that would be wanting to make yourslef known among others when they really just want to hide behind walls
