Depression is an illness that causes a person to feel sad and hopeless for much of the time. It is different from normal feelings of sadness, grief, or low energy.
People who are depressed may also:
Think and speak more slowly than normal.
Have trouble concentrating, remembering, and making decisions.
Have changes in their eating and sleeping habits.
Lose interest in things they once enjoyed.
Be preoccupied with death and/or suicide.
Depression affects men and women of all ages and has often been shown to run in families. A person can have one or many episodes of depression in a lifetime. Each episode of depression makes a person more likely to have another episode of depression.
Most people who are depressed get better with medication, counseling, or a combination of the two. People with suicidal tendencies may need to be hospitalized

One of the best things you can do for your mother is not pressure her into answers she may not wish to divulge right now. Instead, let them take their time, let them come to you as & when they're ready. They may not choose you as their shoulder, don't be offended by this, but keep a distant eye on the support mechanism she might use (eg talking to someone known to be a drug addict or alcoholic - that's the last thing you - or your mother - needs while enduring depression).
Give her the time she needs, give her the distance too. Let her find her feet.

i am not an expert but have some experience. lots of depressed people can't seem to concentrate on, seemingly, ordinary things. sometimes, they stare blankly into space. there are a million symptoms. talk to your mom. ask her what is bothering her. it could be financal problems, problems with a neighbor, or another million things. there is help available throughout the country. check with your county social services. they can direct you to someone who can help.

Check these websites.....have your mom take the test on site 1 or 2 and read a bit more about it on the 3rd site. Educate yourself and it might not seem quite so scary for you sweetie.

Depression is bad because it can lead to worse things....i.e. suicide, hurting herself and others...etc. Get your mom to get help immediately...she will thank you for it later...
