I have tried running it from microsoft's web site directly and downloading it to the hard drive first. Either way at the end when you click "finish" it says windows media player was improperly installed. I tried uninstalling version 9 first and now I have no player at all. And yes Im using XP. I have no clue what to try. No error codes pop up. Just the installed improperly message. Any ideas or help???

Maybe Im not deleting version 9 correctly. Can anyone tell me the right way? I know where to get version 10, it just won't take.

Ok, tried all that. When I put my windows XP CD in, it says the CD is older than the version already on my computer. It came with the computer and says XP Home on it. Anyway, how do I do a format?

Sometimes using the add/remove program feature in control panel doesn't always remove every file or folder. You might have to dig a little deeper to completely uninstall WMP 9 before you can reinstall WMP 10. Try this:

1. Start -> search -> all files and folders
2. Type in "windows media player" without the quote marks
3. Look In: My Computer (from drop down menu)
4. Advanced Options: make sure you check mark Search Hidden Files and Folder, Search Subfolders, and Search System Folders
5. Run the search. Be patient, could take a while.
6. If ANY files are found with "windows media player" in the name (including version 9 and 10 since you may have some of 10 left),
highlight the file name by clicking on it once, and delete.
7. You should now have a clean computer and the WMP 10 download should work. Use this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/default.aspx

I would NOT get WMP 11. It's still in Beta testing which means not all the bugs and problems have been worked out. WMP 10 has been around long enough that it's pretty stable.

Hope this helps.

Try the following:
To get WMP 9:
Open Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs
Click on Add/Remove Windows Components
The option before last should be Windows Media Player, if its checked, uncheck it, click next, and continue witht he steps, then open the same screen again, but check it this time, have the Windows CD in the CD-Rom Drive, and proceed with its installation

Try WMP 11 Beta:
The link for it is:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx
The download link is:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/e/e/eeeb2d1e-8000-4f23-b770-ddb34a9c8f45/wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe

If you get the same error with WMP 11, then you proably have a Windows System Files Error, which you might be able to resolve by doing a "Repair Windows"...

This is done by starting the Windows setup procedure [boot from CD not installation from under Windows], and choose the Repair option and not hte install option.

If the problem still occurs, then a format would be most recommended...

Hope this helps...

Good Luck!
