First of all, I had to stop thinking of it as a battle. Every day, I made plans of what attack I would use that night. Pills, herbs, tea, breathing techniques. By focusing on it so much, I actually made it worse. There are only a few things that actually helped me sleep better. Excersise and no heavy meals, alcohol, or caffiene after 7pm. The rest of it has just been not worrying about sleep. Distracting myself with positive thoughts and if I fall asleep, then I sleep, otherwise, I just relax in bed and make the most of it. I rarely have trouble functioning the next day, even if I have a bad night of sleep. The less I've worried about it, the better I sleep. I've gone from an average 3 hrs/night to 6 hrs/night. I'm still working on it but I seem to have fewer and fewer bad nights since I have switched to this mindset. I wish you sweet dreams!

Melatonin, 3mg (OTC). Natural supplement that helps regulate your day/night cycle. Or if you don't want to go the pill route, don't stay in bed when you can't fall asleep. Set your alarm for a certain time in the morning and get up even if you only get 2 hours of sleep. Continue doing that, but try to push back what time you are gettin to sleep (even 15 mins a night) after a couple weeks you should be getting 6-8 hours.

I sleep better when I walk at least 3 miles a day. Insomnia just seems to be a fact of life as you age.

i've used herbals such as melatonin, which doesn't necessarily knock you out, but induces relaxation and makes my sleep deeper. for me, it's pretty easy to build a tolerance and have to switch to something else (i.e. valerian root) temporarily.
also, forcing yourself to change habits may help. no caffiene after noon, turn off the tv and pick up a book, etc.

The best way was accepting it and getting a job that I do not have to be at until 2pm.

The worst way: chemicals.
