It was always my understanding that the National Guard was state...meaning that if the state had an emergency, the Guard was activated and used in that capacity. The Army reserves was to replace the regular Army in posts in the U.S. when they were activated.

The idea that the National Guard exists only for a stateside role is a myth.

The National Guard has fought in every overseas war since it was created in 1906.

The numbers of National Guard have been cut from 50,000 to
23,000 in May 2006. The Guardsmen are paid & trained to protect the nation not the state. Thus the name "National"
& paid by the Federal goverment. I do not know how people came to believe they were paid to play soldier once a month & pickup tree limbs during storms, they have always been part of our defense.

One of the jobs or the National Guard is to be called up for active duty on foreign tours when the regular forces are stretched too thin.

Well they need so many and thats what they are trained for. I take it you have a family going and it is confusing. I am sorry but remember they knew when they inlisted what it entails and when there is a crisis all rules go out the window.
Oh by the way I was active duty 5 years guards /reserves for 10 years.

My best friends son is in the NG and he just got home from Iraq a couple of days ago and my nephew is getting ready to leave. They prepare the guard more thoroughly when they are being shipped out. The send them for more artillery training and such things. As for why they are there it is written in our laws that the NG will be in each state to help out in times of state emergencies. The state pays for that. In times of war the federal government can and does mobile the NG to serve where ever they are needed. The federal government pays for that.

it is apart of their job. my hubby has been in the army national guard since 97 and has been deployed to Bragg and Iraq. when you join the army national guard you are told that you could go to war and they are usually the first sent. The army national guard is trained to fight.

"In the Army National Guard You Can!"

They only send in the National Guard when the ATF or FBI is too busy to circumvent the rights of people.

They are used to enforce unconstitutional laws, and occasionally to help the citizenry loot TV stores.

The National Guard is not in Iraq, what war are you referring to?

I agree with you, and many were ill trained to do the jobs in a combat situation as they just don't get that much training!

That really sets them up to be killed, and many were, while the Regular Army is sitting in the states!
