From now on, when we see a really stupid or mean question, from any side of the debate, let's not even acknwledge it with an answer. we will not do any good until we create a culture of civility.
as for all the, they started it, or, they won't stop insulting me. when is someone going to take the higher ground? I'm willing to do that if my fellow answerers are.

Sounds good but who gets to be the judge that says who the responsible YA users are? Do we get to vote?

Maybe instead of ignoring them we could all have the same answer that way we would continue to get the points for answering, but the person that sent it would get the message of what we think.

What should we pick as the "common answer" we can all use?

I'm already ignoring about 99.99% of questions, since I only have time to answer a few on any given day. I daresay you're the same. So your point is moot.

And while we're smugly occupying the "higher ground", what do you suppose the crowd will get up on the rest of the ground? Do you really dare to turn your back? I don't.

If you think anything is worth fighting for, better be prepared for an ugly fight -- because they're ALL ugly.

I think we should all maintain a level of respect for one another. Keep in mind, though, that if there is no best answer, they will get their points back and thus have more available to hurl more insults. I wonder if we might be able to come up with another solution that doesn't involve ignoring the problem and hoping it will go away?

I say we respond calmly and respectfully. With luck, they will learn something from our behavior. But I'll go with the majority on this one.

Best wishes.

Oh, come now, where is your sense of adventure? Let us not get too cultured. Civil is so often another polite tea party. Who pours today, and do we do cookies or little tea sandwiches?

Nothing like a good snit to get the ball rolling and juices flowing! Won't happen if we are all polite and civil, dear. Most of us enjoy ourselves, dish out a few lumps, take a few and laugh our a**es off in between times.

Remember some of the stupidest, meanest offenders are just as serious as you, that's where the laughs come in. Relax, Q&A is entertainment, it ain't tea and crumpets!

People! do not answer this question. LOL
Great idea. Why don't we come up with a secret code. Like, everyone go to entertainment and music , but really go to computers and Internet.
We just need someone to come up with a code book, then, email it to all the responsible people, and we're home free. Hey you know what else? Maybe we could come up with a secret handshake, and then when we cross paths outside the cyberworld,we'll know we're the responsible ones!

Although i fully agree, i even posted a similar question about a month ago....i always choose between 3 options:

1. ignoring, which is usually the wisest.
2. answering them with a loving answer, they never expect that
3. when it is something really bad, like racism, i prefer to expose them with a new question. that's my way of pointing them out, and maybe someday one of them will learn something from it. i know it's only a 1% chance that someone will learn something from it, but in my eyes it's my duty.

99% i just simply ignore, btw.

the fourth option is reporting to Yahoo. but i never did or do that, because i don't like anonymous reports, i think they are useless in the education process :)

good proposal, and i really wish it would work.

As much as I agree with your sentiments, I believe that the YA community is just too big to be policed by a chosen few. We can take all the higher ground as you call it but if we believe that it is within our rights to ignore them, I believe that they also have their own rights to consider.

Anyways, I am with you, though.

I use the report button all the time, especially on people who leave answers like "try google." It takes a day or two, but at least its doing something.

I've been trying to dodge those kinds of questions, too. However, I occasionally give in and answer one, hoping that maybe a point will get across.
