3. Contrary to common belief calories burned is merely a matter of mass/distance. It is NOT a calculation of "work" at all. You burn the same # of calories whether you walk, jog, or bike. The benefit of jogging and biking is to your cardio-pulmonary system, not burning extra calories.

Running: 5 mph (12 min/mile) for 30 minutes = 466 calories
Bicycling: 12-13.9 mph, leisure, moderate effort for 30 minutes = 466 calories

Try measuring total calories burned on a treadmill and then on a stationary bike. Keep your HR at the same level for the same amount of time or run 3 miles at a certain HR (and how much time it took you) and then ride a bike at that same HR until you get to the same total calories burned.

I believe running is more strenuous, b/c of what someone else said, you're also supporting your own weight.
I'd rather bike for 4 or 5 hours than run 4 or 5 hours.

Well, it would depend on how hard you ride compared to how hard you run. Running and biking both work different muscles, but from my experience, running burns more than riding does. However, riding 6 miles would burn more calories than running 1 mile would. I would have a day where you run a mile or two and bike 3 or 4 miles and a day where you run 3 miles and ride 1 or 2 miles for your workout.

You burn more calories running. Because you are supporting your full body weight, thus burning more cal per minute the more you weigh. On average, an hour of cycling is equal to a 30 minute run on flat terrain.
