In the past year, this has happened about 6 times; 4 of those 6 times has happened in the past couple of months.

I am asleep and I wake up to what sounds like VERY loud knocking. I always think someone is banging on my door. But, right after I wake up...it stops, and there is never anyone around. I thought for a while it was a prankster, but it happened once on vacation...and I recently moved and it has happened at my new home.

Each time this has happened, I always get a massive headache just below my left ear...at the base of my skull. I have always had migraines, but these are different. These headaches are much worse.

I have been examined and there is nothing to cause this. I am wondering if the knocks and headaches are associated or coincidental??

Keep in mind this only occurs while I am asleep, and not after a full nights sleep either. Sometimes 2-3 hrs into it, sometimes 46 mins into an afternoon nap.

Anyone else ever experience this or know anyone who has?

Ok, I know this is going to sound crazy but here it goes.
I am very supersticious ok, and after reading what you wrote here's what I think.
You ever have a dream where there's lots of water involved, and suddenly you wake up because you have to pee?
Well in this case you hear someone knockin, and then you get a headache. I think you have a little angel telling you to look deeper in the situation. Please check your self for a brain tumor, or any type of brain/mental/head condition. The headaches is what scare me. Its something in your head. Usually patients with brain tumors detected too late because they ignored the vital signs. I am not trying to scare you, but after working at the hospital for years, this sound familiar. Try a doctor specialized in the field, I hope you are well, and remember you have nothing to lose but your life. I believe in angels, and things like this, I honestly believe there's something wrong and someone really up high is trying to help you.

I think you can agree that no one is really banging on your door at all of the those different places...so the alternative is that the "noise" is something you are perceiving rather than something that is actually happening.

Migraine headaches have all sort of prodromes...odd smells and changes in vision are most common, sometimes tastes. Sounds are more rare but there is no reason it can not manifest as a sound as easily as any other sensory input. The key here is to take your migraine medication as soon as the knocking sound is perceived and you will have a better chance of heading the bad headache off at the pass. You may also try to consider any rhyme or reason to this phenomenon...eating a certain food, sleeping in a certain position, etc, etc...some similarity in your routine the prior few hours.

Finally if you have not ever had a CT head scan then it would be reasonable to do one. There has been a significant change in your migraine headaches and one wonders if there might be organic change that would show up on a study...if that is negative then that is probably all of the workup you require.

People do complain about hearing their own pulse often, but they never describe it as someone pounding on their door.

You are probably hearing your own pulse, which your brain is interpreting as a knocking sound. It could be related to the headache, because the carotid artery runs through where you are feeling the pain, and the sound you here would be connected to an increase in the pulse rate, which possibly implies some kind of constriction in the blood vessels. So this may be related to the same thing that is triggering your migraines. Hearing your pulse, especially when in bed, is not uncommon and is not in itself a concern (see link below) but the fact that you are also suffering from a bad headache makes it more of an issue.

Maybe this is supernatural or maybe there are some unresolved issues that your brain is trying to solve. I wake up at exactly 4 am every morning. I don't know for some reason, i always roll over and it's 4 o'clock in the eye. I never had to set my clock for 4 am. where would I be going at 4 am? I always wonder about that too.

I've sometimes imagined loud noises shortly after falling asleep. I never had headaches associated with them though. Maybe the headaches are due to suddenly waking up and probably lifting your head quickly at the imagined sound.
I once imagined a fire alarm going off. Maybe you're very tired when you go to bed.

This doesn't seem the same but when I'm sleeping i always hear one of my family members whisper my name in my ear and when I wake up I'm all alone. I know that this doesn't help you or it's not the same thing but I just wanted to share. It just creeps me out when it happens cause alot of times I hear my brother and he's in Iraq right now.

No offense to anyone who examined you, but my first thought was STROKE warnings,,,TIA's???

I've certainly had them.

Unrelated to that it might just be something that sticks with you that may have been some subtle trauma experience,,,or an enjoyable experience that your subconcsious cannot dismiss?

I'd get more opinions from the medical community, rather than look for answers here,,,No offense meant.

I've heard of stories of people with brain tumors who have heard strange noises.... I'd go to a second doctor and get catscans and stuff just in case. However, it may just be something with your ears.

You need to tell your primary doctor so he can send you to a neurologist. It could be something or not. We are not doctors and mri and other tests may be uncomfortable but I would do them to rule out anything serious and go from there.
Good luck,
