Heat is a prime factor in the formation of hurricanes. Global warming, as it has come to be known, contributes to the heating of the ocean's waters. This has been shown to increase the intensity of phenomena such as hurricanes.
In short, global warming doesn't start hurricanes, it does contribute to the severity of them.
