Do women who wear hijab in hot climates suffer from overheating? The cloth needs to be covering, loose, and thick enough as to not be able to see the body shape. What about summertime in Africa or the Middle East? Or California? Or Mexico? These places are so hot, and people who don't wear the hijab sometimes suffer from heat stroke. If the hijab is to cover everything except for what is necessary, wouldn't it be necessary to uncover the neck at least? Couldn't women wear a big hat instead?

I'm not Muslim, but I do respect this beautiful religion very much. I have five hijabs, and have tried them on indoors. I had to remove them after 1/2 hour, they felt too hot. Is discomfort required when wearing a hijab?

Also, if a society doesn't see the hair and neck as a sexual lure, if the hair is in a topknot and the neck is exposed but not down to the bosom, in this case wouldn't it be all right to leave the head uncovered?

I ask with respect, please know this.

iam Muslim, i haven't try it myself.
a Muslim woman is required to cover all her body except her face and her hand, and a Muslim man had to cover what's between his belly to his knees.

about feeling Hot in summer, yes it could feel hot for them. but if she had medical condition that may put her life in danger, then God is the most merciful all forgiver. what's more important that Muslim women do it for God.

my Dad once told me my mom to take off her hijab when she went to the airport, he even argued with her (he was afraid if someone insulted her for being Muslim), but she refused my dad request and she wear it for God sake, no one else.

by the way i like the way you approach ur question, you are a good person from few.

It's actually not as bad as you might think. It all depends on what you wear. I started wearing hijab about a year and a half ago. Before that I wore what most Americans wear - shorts and t-shirts. Last summer was my first time being fully clothed in hot weather. Much to my surprise, it wasn't all that bad. So long as I stuck with natural fabrics (cotton, linen), I wasn't hot. In fact, I think I did a little better in the summer than any previous time. I am white and have very fair skin, so the sun kills me. It just drains the life out of me. I discovered that when I am in the sun with my skin covered, I don't have that problem. As an added bonus, I didn't get sunburned like I always used to, except for my face of course. It could have also had something to do with the head covering. I have very dark brown hair, which soaks in the rays. Covering it with lighter fabrics might have kept me cooler, but the jury is still out on that. As a side note - long skirts are much cooler than you might think. They actually have a bit of an air conditioning affect. As you are walking, you get that air flow, which cools down your legs. This is probably why traditionally both men and women in hot climates wear/wore long robes. I should state though that my experience may have been a little different than that of other hijabis. Some hijabis always cover their neck, whereas I do not. I always cover my hair, but don't always cover my neck. Last summer I tended to wear turban styles, because covering your hair doesn't make you hot in the least, but covering your neck can make you very hot, as evidenced by the fact that you see (non-hijabi) women wearing fashion scarves in the fall and winter, but not in the summer.

When people ask me this, it's actually a question of material, really. It's blistering hot here, this summer, but I'm burning just like everyone else. I would wear something light and thin, with white or pastel colour hijabs instead of darker, heavier ones (which absorbs heat/light).

The Western culture (as I call it) supports the idea of the health of human physique as a sexual lure, but in Islam, what defines an attractive person is their personality, no?

well ,iam Muslim girl wearing hijab and also live in Egypt so its really hot in summer when we ( Muslim girls ) wear hijab we do it for god Allah ,so we don't care if its hot or not as its something u do for Allah and i love Allah u know just as if u like someone so much ,u will want to obey him and do what he likes u to do
so we are not doing it foe anyone we do it for ALLAH
Muslim girl get her period and refused to wear hijab, we call this a sin in Islam so it obligation but we do it out of love and fear from hell at the same time.
in Islamic society its not about if Ur hair or neck considered as a sexual lure or not
we have to wear hijab no one imposed on us only we do it for Allah not for anyone else
there is a verse in al quran stated in its meaning that every Muslim girl or women has to cover her hair and body some scholars say she should cover her face too but what is well agreed by all Muslims scholars is covering her hair and body

That is why we are blessed with A/C. I know women who will wear a full hijab and other who only cover their hair with outside. myself I will spend as little time in public when it is hot. When it is hot I will wear hijabs that are made of cotton so that the cloth can breath.

A friend of mine once said that the fire of hell would be hotter then the the heat of the summer.

Good question. I'm sure it gets a little warm, but if women in the middle of the desert in the Middle East and Africa can do it, I'm sure we can to. God doesn't impose a burden on someone that is not beneficial for that individual. A little heat is worthwhile to protect one's modesty and honor. My mother wears the hijab and it gets a little warm. At her work, she had to buy an extra fan at her desk. But she is fine with it because she knows it pleases God. She will be rewarded for her troubles that she is undergoing because God told her to.

I actually think hair and neck is very sexually appealing to men and, hence, needs to be covered.

Hmmm....basically Islamic laws states that a woman should cover herself to show modesty and propriety. In strict Islamic countries (i.e Saudi Arabia, Syria, Libya....) this is not up for debate or discussion. In open-minded countries (i.e. Turkey, the Baltic states...) it's the opposite. The Quran states that women must cover themselves to avoid impropriety and therefore unwittingly entice men to commit sin (ex. thoughts of illicit sex, fornication, adultery, etc.). In tropical countries like the Philippines, some muslim women just cover their heads up to their chest and wear modest clothing (buttoned shirts, t-shirts and jeans).

well, they mostly stay indoors or wear light colors.
the complete hijab is kinda loose, which allows air to circulate under it. Finally, if air temp is above 100, you want to cover up since the air actually warms you up :)

If this was not convinient for those that do it they will not, that u feel hot and uncomfortable in it does not make it hot and uncomfortable.

this people like it that way and even if u convert them they will still wear it, i guess they should be given credit for such endurance
