it's just a noise a cat makes when it is surprised, startled, or excited. My cat used to do the same thing in the summer when she saw a moth. It's like a broken meow, and it is perfectly normal.

Most of these people have no idea what they're talking about. Your cat is not psycho, it is not breed specific and he's not trying to mate with a bug! The chatter/clicking that you hear is a noise cats make when they are in their "hunt" mode. They usually make this noise when they see something they can't get to. I've woken up to this sound EVERY single morning when the birds start waking up. You cat is perfectly normal and healthy. I think it's the people who submitted the absurd answers that need to be placed in a home. Enjoy your healthy perfectly sane kitty! :0)

It's normal. Your cat is just excited. Cats make different sounds for different things. Not all of the cats I've ever had made this noise but some of them did.

My cat does this weird 1/2 meow at flies & moths. She'll stalk them until she catches it & then eats it. She also eats spiders, which is great as I despise those critters! I haven't seen one in the 2 1/2 years I've had her, just the cobwebs left behind. It's normal & nothing to worry about.

Hmmm, sounds like the cat is trying to stun the flying insects
using this repeatative clicking noise. You need to inform your feline that it is not a sperm whale. Honest !
What an interesting cat.

Yes, they do this funny "chittering" noise and shake the tips of their tails when they see flying things--both birds and insects.
When I had a Siamese cat (when I was a girl), she never did this. But every tabby cat that I've ever had does this. So maybe it's a breed-specific thing?
Maybe it's cat-talk for, "Ooh! Ooh! I see a flying thing!!"?

Cats do that all the time when they are after something they want to catch and cant reach, like mine do it when seeing birds on the other side of the window.

Yes, I have a female cat and everytime she sees a bug or bird she does that. Its just a sign of interest in the thing.

My cat used to do that. It's like they really don't want to meow, but are very interested in something. That's how my cat would verbalize that emotion.
