It has been a few years since I have been to any health club and I am thinking of starting up again. But I want to do my workouts barefoot. I know that I will need footwear for some of the equipment but not most of it.

NO! NO! NO!
You can get so many problems from this!
First of all, you should have some support for your feet/arches, etc.
Second, I tried that at a tanning booth ONCE............and now have problems with the itchy, burning feet!

Athletes foot, and many other fungus/infections are so easy to get.

No. This is a health hazard to yourself and everyone else. Think of all the body fluids hitting the floor and being wiped off on equipment, etc. If you have any opening on your foot (e.g. a cut/wound) you will be easily infected. If you had your own gym, I'd recommend working out barefoot because that's the way your body was meant to work! But keep the boots on in the health club. The shoes that feel most like bare-feet for me are the classic Adidas Samba indoor soccer shoes. They have a very flat, hard sole, and once broken in, feel like they aren't there.

The health club I go to requires tennis shoes. Check with the club you plan on joining and see what their requirements are.

After reading all the answers, they are right, but they left out 1 thing, when exercising you should always wear proper foot wear, not because of germs, but because your foot gets in different positions, footwear prevents cramping....... and other such things.

No, you can infect diseases like wart, corn. Why don't you wear a thin shoe so that your feet are flexible to move? but be sure the soles of your shoe is thick enough not to slip away on the floor. Check the soles whether they are made of leather or not.

You should wear some kind of footwear. Lots of places are unsanitary, and have things that could affect you health. (i.e. fungus, and some parasitic organisms.) Besides, if you drop something on your foot, then you could do serious damage to yourself.
