As a safety precaution for all involved...

Anyone using a needle runs the risk of accidentally pricking themselves OR someone else other than the intended subject.

And not only that... if their organs are harvested for donation, it prevents the chances of contaminating the organs.

AND, most dirty needles have been discarded after use to prevent accidents. The needle would pass through a few hands before it reached it's destination... therefore, it makes no sense to risk other people's lives to save a couple of bucks by not using a new sterilized needle.

I think there are some valid answers already given but I would like to add two more. One possibility could be in case they have donated an organ(s). Another could be that a case could be made that they were ordered to die that way so if they are contaminated with something other than the prescribed drugs maybe the death would be ruled illegal causing all kinds of legal issues to open up.

8th amendment, but it makes as much sense as not using lethal injection because it is cruel and unusual. Although I do not support the death penalty, it seems that if you are so barbaric as to want to kill someone, why do you have to make sure it doesn't hurt and is done in a sanitary matter?

I agree with Woman of Faith. It's very possible that in the last minute, something could happen and the execution could be aborted and in that case, it would bad if the person got sick and maybe even died because of an infected needle. Good answer Woman of Faith.

Maybe in case of a last minute stay by the governor. Then there would not be a lawsuit against the state by the (now living) prisoner for catching some dread disease.

Habit? What doctor or nurse would want to use an unsterilized needle. Most now are disposable anyway.

Because the liberals don't want their fellow brothers and sisters to be infected, because they are hoping that the prisoner will be pardoned, even after the injection :)

if the needle was dirty and the governor called with a pardon or a stay of execution and the inmate became sick or infected that would constitute cruel and unusual punishment
