My dog doesn't smell. He gets bathed (shampoo and conditoner) once a month at the groomer and sometimes inbetween with just water.

Most dogs don't need to be bathed more than once a month. If you bathe too often, their skin can become dry and itchy. Most dogs that smell can be cleaned by rinsing with water for 15-20 minutes.

Sometimes dogs will get a "fishy" odor. This is often caused by blocked or clogged anal gands. The glands can be expressed by a vet or you can do it yourself. Simply pinch the area just outside the anus at 10 and 2 oclock. Wear latex gloves, the suff is oily and very gross smelling. If the glands are blocked they may need to be expressed by the vet.

Dog's skin produces an oil called sebum. That is what carries the odor. Some breeds produce more sebum than others, so smell stronger. Some dog's have bacteria growing in the oil, so they are the ones that are extra smelly.

When the sebum gets wet, the moisture activates the volatile oils and it activates it to smell even stronger.

I use Colgate Men's shaving foam (cheapest one) to give smelly dogs a dry bath...Just apply it, rub it in and wipe it dry.
This won't be handy on a long haired breed, but works for short or medium haired breeds.

Not all have body odor, just the ones who HAVE to live outdoors. Or the owners do not know how to take good care of their pets. Some dogs like to go outside and roll into something nasty or dead, that could be 1 reason why your dog stinks or mange. Have your vet check your dog to see if it has mange on the body. If so, have him treated right away.

All animals have body odor. That's why we use deodorant. There is no way to prevent it. But if your looking for better smell. Either bathe your pet. Or - My wife uses a damp clothe with mouthwash. This disinfects our dogs and they smell a little better. There are Dog & cat fragrances (look online) and they're harmless.

All living things have a distinctive odor. Doggie odor smells great to dogs, however as people we don't care too much for the smell. Fortunately our four legged friends still love us although we insist they bathe and wear things that smell good to us.
