I believe it has to do with a higher fat to muscle content that women have. Protein is required to maintain muscle, as muscle is made up of protein. Carbohydrates turn themselves into fat when they are not used up. The more fat cells you have to more signals are sent to maintain them, hence often overweight people naturally crave to eat more. It a up hill battle in such instances but that is another story. In short women have a genetic slant towards child rearing in which greater fat stores are more useful. And men have a genetic slant towards protection and bring home the food in which more muscle comes in handy.
